"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

When Calderside Academy told us they were planning on doing a Kindness Project we were thrilled to be able to help out.

We donated some lovely craft supplies and the girls and boys made great use of them by decorating plant pots and gifting lovely plants to our local care home. What a wonderful, kind thing to do and we even got one which now has pride of place in our canteen. Thank you to all at the ASN unit, we hope your kindness comes back to you.

It was a privilege and a pleasure to have been invited to represent Asda Blantyre at Calderside Academy's Senior Awards Evening.

Regardless of whether they had eight awards or one every single child was celebrated. My hands were sore clapping these exceptional kids. It was fabulous to hear the School are gaining success rates year on year and is testament to the Head teacher Mrs Calder and her team along with our hard working kids. As well as our local councillors, primary school headteachers, PTA representatives and of course our Lord Provost Bert, I bumped into my fellow community colleague Emma from Robroyston. Emma's brother Jake achieved four awards and is also school captain. Well done to all involved, what a night!– Mary, Asda community champion

We are very lucky in Blantyre to have The Blantyre Scottish Pensioners’ Association.

When Ann who runs the group learned I had nominated them for the Asda Foundation Better Together Grant she was delighted. She applied for £500 to pay for a Christmas get together for local pensioners at the Blantyre Miners Welfare. When the Foundation awarded the group double that amount she was over whelmed.

Ann said: “It’s hard to raise funds these days as we struggle with bills and rising costs. I cannot thank Asda Foundation enough for their support, this will really help our wee group."

Steven, our store manager and senior director Danny came along to let them know the good news and even got an invite to the Christmas party!

Great to see Traci and John’s lovely love story making headlines.

A Lanarkshire couple who met in the aisles of Blantyre Asda have now tied the knot after celebrating their "perfect" wedding day 💍

Newlyweds Traci and John Gray first became friends when they joined the supermarket's nightshift team in 2015, and became a couple two years later thanks to the encouragement of colleagues 💜

They walked down the wedding aisle at Blantyre Old Parish Church earlier this month, and enjoyed a reception with 120 guests at Blantyre Miners’ Welfare hall – just opposite the Glasgow Road store where their story began✨

Congratulations Traci and John!

We were thrilled to be part of the amazing Community Fun Day held in the lovely grounds of David Livingstone Birthplace.

The day was an opportunity to chat to everyone about all things Asda, from Asda Rewards, Tell Asda, grants, donations etc. I talked to people about Tickled Pink, Children In Need and gave out bubbles, sweeties and our Cbeebies holiday packs.

The rain didn't stop us from having a great day. Thanks to Sandra and all at the centre for arranging all the sports games, the kids had a brilliant time and to the Police Scotland volunteers for helping too. Danni our local Community Cop really worked hard arranging all the services and I can still hear that siren ringing in my ears! 🚨

What a fabulous community, Asda are proud to be part of it!

When 17-year-old Janette came through the doors of our Blantyre store in 1981, she never imagined she’d still be part of the team 45 years later.

Back then, Janette says she wasn’t sure what the future held, but working at Asda turned out to fit her busy family life perfectly. She said: “It’s been a huge part of my life across five decades – I love being part of the team. I've made lifelong friends along the way, and some of my favourite memories are of the girls I started with and the days when the canteen was full of everyone chatting about what was on TV.

"I worked during Covid and really loved that our store was so important to people then. I saw us all coming together as a great community and the kindness shown to each other was amazing to see."

Janette was recently honoured at a Big Asda Celebration event for long-serving colleagues. Community champion Mary said: "Janette is a fantastic colleague, and we’re all thrilled for her to have reached this incredible milestone. Congratulations from all your colleagues here at the store."

Just some of our wee Duck Hunters from our duck hunt last week.

The whole store went quackers with the adults in a huff as the ducks are for our wee Customers only! When chatting with a few customers they were saying the holidays can be so expensive. So thanks to our lovely customer Emma we decided to have a wee free event. Keep an eye out for our next duck hunt coming soon. And remember to look after your new friend, they need lots of love. 🐤

Thank you for they wee smiles!

Pictured, from left, are: Janette (checkouts, 45 years of service), Roseann (checkouts, 25 years), Sharon (bakery and home shopping, 25 years), Lauren (ambient manager), Heather (George and GM manager), Karen (George, 30 years), Elaine (produce and checkouts, 40 years) and Georgina (Nightshift and checkouts, 25 years). Missing from the picture is cash office colleague Angela, who was sadly poorly, and store manager Steven, who have both hit the 25-year milestone. Steven is away supporting the Scotland football team in Boston. Thank you to each and every one of you serving the community of Blantyre all these years. We hope you all had a ball.
