"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

It was so lovely to visit the wonderful Still Shining group to award them £500.00 from the Asda Foundation towards their Christmas party! 🎄🎉

Still Shining was set up to help tackle loneliness and isolation for people with disabilities in our community.

What a lively and welcoming group they are! It was fantastic to spend time with everyone, and as usual I’ve been hugged to death! 🥰 🤗

So pleased the Asda Foundation could support such a fantastic local group and help make their Christmas celebration extra special. 🎅🎄

🌞 It was a lovely morning spent with The Crafty Club at Ivy Street Community Centre.

Alongside the fantastic volunteers, we served lunch, got creative making handmade fans, and rounded off the session with a fun game of bingo 🪭

The Crafty Club was established to help reduce loneliness and isolation across Blackburn with Darwen by providing a welcoming space for people with disabilities to connect, make friends, and enjoy activities together.

It’s always a privilege to support initiatives like this and see the positive impact they have on the local community. Thank you to everyone involved for such a warm and enjoyable morning. 💚

🌯 Our final school visit of the month today took us to St. Mary & St. Joseph’s School, where the children enjoyed making healthy tuna and cheese salad wraps, served with carrot sticks and hummus dip.

A huge thank you to everyone for making me feel so welcome. The pupils were a credit to the school, so well behaved, polite, and enthusiastic throughout the session.

I’m now taking bookings for school healthy eating workshops in September and October. If you’d like to arrange a visit, I’d love to hear from you 🍎 🍏

🍊 I had a lovely morning with 19 pupils from St. James’ CE Primary School in Darwen.

The children were a credit to their school, so well behaved, polite and enthusiastic throughout the session.

I took along plenty of freshly chopped fruit and, together, we created colourful fruity yoghurt pots. The pomegranate seeds were definitely the firm favourite!

A big thank you to the teachers for their support and to the pupils for making the session so enjoyable. It was wonderful to see everyone getting involved, learning about healthy eating and having fun along the way 🍎

What a wonderful morning spent with 30 amazing Year 4 pupils at Feniscowles Junior School! 💚

It was also a real trip down memory lane, as I spent my own primary school years here back in 1980. Walking through the school brought back so many happy memories, making today's visit even more special.

I took along some freshly prepared chopped salad, and together we made healthy ham and cheese wraps. The children also had the chance to try chopped peppers with a tasty hummus dip, and it was lovely to see so many of them enjoying something new. 🥒 🍅 🧀

There were lots of smiles, great conversations and plenty of enthusiasm as everyone made their own delicious creations. Seeing the children get involved and enjoy healthy food is always such a rewarding experience.

A huge thank you to all the wonderful pupils and staff for making me feel so welcome. You were all incredibly well behaved, polite and enthusiastic, and it was an absolute pleasure to spend the morning with you. Thank you for having me, I hope to visit again soon! 😊
