Asda customer Joanna's visits to our South Ruislip store are going to be a bit different throughout October – she'll be seeing pictures of herself in the store as part of our Tickled Pink 30th anniversary celebrations!

Mother-of-three Joanna is sharing her experience of stage 3 breast cancer, which she discovered after going to see her GP to check out a subtle texture change in her breast, to raise awareness of the importance of regularly checking yourself for anything unusual.

She's very grateful for Asda's Tickled Pink campaign and everyone who's been involved in fundraising over 30 years: "I'd like to say a huge thank you to Asda Tickled Pink because its financial input makes a real difference so that Breast Cancer Now can have things in place to support everybody. Whether they're someone going through a cancer treatment, thinking they might have cancer, or if they're a family member of someone with cancer."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from our Thornaby store are all using their own experiences to spread awareness of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – and in the process have raised tens of thousands of pounds for our Tickled Pink campaign as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.

The trio have all had breast cancer and are well known in the store and the local community for dressing up in pink wigs and tutus and holding fundraising events for the campaign's charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! which always go down well with customers and colleagues.

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. Awareness is the big thing for for me and checking yourself is so important. That’s what Tickled Pink does; it gets the message out there. Cancer is just a big scary word, but we must try to not look at the doom and gloom of it all. There are lots of positives. Medical research has improved leaps and bounds to what it was years ago. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about."

Pauline has recently retired, although she's already returned to the store to continue her fundraising. She's been instrumental in establishing a second-hand book stall at the front of the store for customers and colleagues which brings in about £2,000 to £3,000 a year for Tickled Pink. She said: We are the faces of Tickled Pink here and we are always here for anyone who needs to talk. In years gone by breast cancer wasn't talked about, but thankfully it is now. Tickled Pink has made breast cancer an everyday word; it's nothing to shy away from."

Julie has had breast cancer twice and says Tickled Pink's message of raising awareness of the importance of regularly checking yourself is vital. She said: "Early detection is so, so important, and I feel so lucky. This year I've been to the celebrations of my son, Martin, who has turned 40, and my oldest grand-daughter Ellie who turned 21 and graduated from university too. I've a little grand-daughter, Maisie, who's just turned six who I may not have even met, so I'm really thankful."

Look out for wonderful volunteers like Avter who'll be in our stores this weekend raising awareness and money for our Tickled Pink campaign, which supports charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!.

Avter's a regular customer at our Gillingham Pier store and has shared her experience of breast cancer as part of Tickled Pink's 30th anniversary celebrations. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer as a young mother at the age of 22 and she found the whole experience both lonely and terrifying and felt very isolated. So when in 2024, at the age of 56, she was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer she was determined things would be different. Rather than bottling up her experiences and trying to hide the fact she has breast cancer, Avter is sharing her story to help others like her feel less alone. She has attended Moving Forward, a course funded by Tickled Pink, designed to enable women like Avter to meet regularly, share their experiences and help each other.

She said: "The first time I had cancer there was nothing, no support, but this time I felt I’ve had a lot of support and not just from family and friends. I will talk to people about it because I think it’s important and there are resources are out there that weren’t there before. Moving Forward was brilliant. They hold sessions, face-to-face, and they have volunteers that come in and host the groups. And through there I met three other ladies who’ve been through breast cancer and we keep in contact through our WhatsApp group and we meet every three months and we support each other. It’s been lovely to be able to talk about it.

"It’s lovely to go on the Breast Cancer Now website to look at all the resources. I’m on it all the time! I’m on Exemestane, which is an estrogen blocker, and initially I was on Letrozole. And it’s just nice to think, 'Am I alone going through these symptoms?' but you see other people’s stories on there and the forums on there are fab. I like hearing of people’s success stories."

We donated water, crisp and biscuit to Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer for their 10 mile trail walk in memory of Joanne Hinckesman and to raise funds for the charity.

Over 60 people will be walking across Clent and Waseley Hills on Sunday 27th September. Myself and a few other community champions from the Birmingham region had the pleasure to meet Joanne and we were amazed how cheerful she was even with the terminal diagnosis. We are grateful that we got to know this amazing lady.

So if you are in the area on the 27th please give them a cheer to keep their spirts up, ir even a donation if you can.

Meet Melanie she's the infant feeding lead nurse for Heartlands and Good Hope Neonatal unit.

Melanie emailed to ask if could Cape Hill help with donating some food items for the parents of the little ones on the unit. If you have ever had a child in hospital you will know how worrying it is and you hate to leave the ward or unit they are on in case something happens. Items donated by Cape hill store cereal bars, milk variety packs of cereal, porridge pots.

Some of you may remember a few months ago I went to help at the allotment that Hamilton School have. I went back the other day and was amazed by how much it has came on.

There wasn't much growing before but now there is potatoes, carrots, aubergines, cabbages and lettuce. My time was spend with fixing the netting to stop the butterflies getting in and weeding. In the picture is the lovely Karen who does so much for the school.

Arrive Alive held a charity 5k & 10k fun run at West Smethwick park along with a car boot sale.

Asda Cape Hill donated bottles of water for those taking part. in the second picture is no 35 the winner of the 5k race and in the third picture is the winner of the 10k race. It was nice to see that even mans best friend was giving the runners encouragement to complete the race. I got to meet local artist Simon Fenton and we chatted about some of the projects he does at community centres for children in the holidays. I also got to meet some lovely ladies from Krazykats Kitty Rescue that are based in Oldbury, they had a table at the event raising funds for their small charity.- Ellen, Asda community champion

A few days ago I noticed a post on Facebook requesting help for a end of life wedding.

Items that were needed were a wedding dress, flowers, decorations and food for a small reception that would be in a side room at the hospital. I reached out to Sri-laxmi to let her know that Asda Cape Hill and Asda Queslett would be able to supply them with some food for this good cause.

While I was out doing a litter pick on Saturday I mentioned to another volunteer Parbinder what was needed and she got on her phone straight away to a friend to ask could they make the chocolate wedding cake for Wednesday.

I'd like to say a big thank you to all the kind hearted people that made this possible.–‍ Ellen, Asda community champion

Twenty six years ago Veronica Kumeta started Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer with her friends.

They have since passed away, but Veronica runs the charity in their honour. Over the years the charity has helped thousands of people that are undergoing treatment, their families and even when the treatment is over Veronica is there to sit and have a chat with over a cup of tea. Cancer units all over the Midlands have a stock of Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer's Hugs in a Bag. The bags are filled with everything a person going through treatment will need.
