Today at The White Horse: it was my great pleasure to be asked to accept a very crucial bit of new kit, A Bleed Control Kit ,delivered to me by local girl and charity supporter Alice, along with her mother Julia.
The facts:
A bleed control kit is a specialized emergency pack containing medical tools designed to stop severe, life-threatening external bleeding before ambulance crews arrive.
While a standard first aid kit handles minor cuts and scrapes, a bleed control kit is built specifically for catastrophic blood loss. although we hope never to use, we are safer now in the knowledge that we could help if needs be.
The story:
On Jan 20th , 19 year old Liam was on a night out in Essex with mates when he was set upon and stabbed multiple times. He died shortly after and the group were convicted of his murder. It was a case of mistaken identity - Liam wasn’t supposed to be their target that night and, if a bleed kit had been available - Liam might have survived.
Liam’s Nan Julie and other family members later set up the Legacy to get bleed control kits in as many places as they could. There’s one in every fire station in Essex, plus loads of schools, pubs, community centres etc. They are used in cases of uncontrollable bleeding (not just stabbings) and so far they have saved 4 lives.
Julie is an anti knife crime campaigner. She goes into schools and prisons to give talks. Shes been on national news and won the British Empire Medal for her work.
Alice (pictured above) met Julie at a fundraiser earlier in the year and was very taken with her work. She’s saved up her allowance/work pay to fund a kit. It’s arriving later this week.
And Of course without hesitation The White Horse said yes.
