The weekend marks 6 months since we opened our kitchen doors for the very first time… and honestly, I still can't quite believe it.

So it feels like the right time to show a bit of appreciation to the people who've helped get this thing moving (and kept me vaguely sane).

First up, Immy
Been here with me right from the beginning. My right arm, my second brain, and the person who somehow knows what needs doing before I've even realised it myself. Half the time I think she runs the place and just lets me believe otherwise.

Faith
Not obvious at all that this one belongs to me biologically… absolute mini me. Bosses both me and Immy around with confidence well beyond her years. If anyone wants approval for annual leave, you'll need to speak to management.

Katie
You can try and stop her cleaning… but you're wasting your breath. The place will sparkle… but good luck ever finding where she's put anything afterwards.

Jay
Another one of my creations. Not as extroverted as Faith, keeps themselves to themselves, quietly gets on with things and makes sure the mountain of Sunday dishes somehow disappears.

Oscar
Youngest member of the team and Chief Taste Tester. Usually appears mid-service expecting feeding rights, quietly judges standards, service speed and, most importantly… the quality of the J2O's.

Then there's our bar staff — Evie & Shannon
The first faces you see when you walk through the door. Evie still maintains a passionate and unwavering dislike for cleaning the plastic hanging baskets when it's quiet… still not entirely sure what the issue is there.

We can't forget Sarah
Although she's moved on to pastures new, she was here right at the beginning and stayed with us until recently. A proper top fan from day one and always full of encouragement and support. Thank you Sarah for being part of the start of this adventure — and good luck with your next chapter.

And of course… Claire
Our housekeeper and the one who somehow keeps the place beautifully clean. Which is no small job considering she's constantly battling to clear up Step Toe's clutter (also known as Dick)… or fighting him for custody of the mop. Honestly, between the two of them it's less housekeeping and more competitive cleaning.

Oh and Lyndsay too!
The books. The bloody books. Without her I'd be rocking in the corner pulling my hair out! This woman is responsible for keeping me tight and vaguely compliant with all things mathematics and paperwork related. While I'm over here creating chaos, she's quietly making sure the numbers add up and I don't accidentally run this place entirely on vibes and wishful thinking.

And finally… Dick
Officially holder of the title: Best Floor Mopper Ever There Wasā„¢ļø.
Turns up, mops, supervises and occasionally pretends he's important. Rumour has it he owns the pub… but we don't really acknowledge that!

Truth is — this place wouldn't be what it is without every one of them.

Thank you to everyone who's supported us over these first 6 months. Here's to whatever chaos comes next 🄳

This week we’re using Buston potatoes… and if these roasties aren’t showing off, we don’t know what is šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

Golden, crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle and cooked exactly the way a proper Sunday roast should be. No shortcuts, no frozen trays tipped into an oven — just good local produce, cooked the old fashioned way with a bit of patience and a lot of love.

We’re big believers that great home cooking starts with great ingredients, and these beauties are doing most of the talking today

Come and get your roast fix!

āš ļø Delayed Opening Tonight āš ļø

Due to our shiny new kitchen appliances deciding to arrive a little later than expected (still not quite as fashionably late as the freezer, which turned up two days behind schedule 😭), our kitchen is currently upside down and we've been knocked off our prep timetable.

To give us a chance to get ourselves back together, get everything installed, and make sure we're ready to serve you properly, we'll be opening at 6pm tonight instead of 5pm.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but we promise it'll be worth the wait. The good news is the kitchen is getting some exciting upgrades. The bad news is we're currently trying to remember where we've put everything.

See you from 6pm! šŸ”šŸŸ

One thing we hear time and time again is how much people love the fact that our burgers are served on a proper baker's roll rather than a fancy brioche bun.

We're firm believers that a burger should taste like a burger, not a dessert.

We listen to what our customers want, and we deliver. That's why we're proud to use locally produced James Ford & Son baker's rolls that hold together properly, complement the burger, and don't steal the show.

No pretentiousness. No unnecessary trends. Just good, honest food done right.

And judging by the comments, we're not the only ones who think so!

The team's arrived and ready for work!

We've recruited a fresh batch of staff this morning. They're a bit quiet, don't eat all the chips, and seem happy to stand around all day.

The only concern is that trusting clowns with plates, there's a real risk of too much clowning around..
Still, fingers crossed the work gets done properly today!

As many of you know, we’ve been slowly revamping the dining room and we’ve decided the big back wall is looking a bit bare, boring and in desperate need of some personality.

So we’ve come up with an idea we absolutely love… a proper community photo wall.

We’d love to fill it with photos of our staff, regulars, visitors, memories made here at The Back Kitchen and The Black Swan Belford, and maybe even some authentic artwork created by the children who visit and possibly local history pieces too.

We’re imagining a wall full of completely mismatched old frames of all shapes, sizes and styles — the more random and well-loved, the better.

So before you throw any out or banish them to the loft forever… does anyone have any old photo or picture frames looking for a new home and a second lease of life?

We’d be hugely grateful for any donations.
Bonus points if they’re slightly wonky, vintage, odd or look like they’ve survived three house moves and a family argument.

What a weekend!

Tonight I’ve gone straight to bed!
You lot have absolutely finished me off!

Thank you so much for all of your continued support and the amazing feedback we’re receiving. It honestly means the world watching this tiny kitchen so busy every day.

And again, I’m so sorry to anyone we had to turn away tonight. I genuinely hate doing it. But my kitchen is tiny, and I do my absolute best to squeeze everyone in where I can… sometimes it just stops being physically possible without cloning myself, and I actually have nowhere to put my other me anyway!

Add in this ridiculous heat and the kitchen has basically been functioning as a live-action volcano all weekend. At one point there was a genuine risk of us melting before the ice cream did!

Booking is becoming essential now if you’d like to eat with us — purely to avoid disappointment and to make sure your Saturday night doesn’t end with you standing in the Co-op, clutching a meal deal sandwich with a quivering bottom lip!

Thank you all again.
Now excuse me while I recover 😓

The kitchen hit tropical temperatures tonight so we’ve had no choice but to introduce our new summer uniform policy.

Health & safety said ā€œstay hydrated.ā€
We may have misunderstood slightly.

Serving food, sass, and heatstroke prevention at The Back Kitchen.

If anyone needs us, we’ll be aggressively fanning ourselves near the fryer. 🄵
