Charlie (C.W.) Pope - Fortwilliam Course architect who laid out the first 18 hole iteration of the course (developing on the 9 hole routing by renowned Cuthbert Butchart) after joining the club as our second ever Professional in 1904 before moving to Portstewart Golf Club.
His design featured 11 holes south of Grays Lane and 7 to the north — a layout and sequence very different to today’s routing, but one that still forms much of the course’s underlying fabric.
More than 120 years later, traces of his work can still be found beneath Cave Hill.
