A West Belfast cafe owner is on a mission to help more young people gain vital work experience to help them get into employment 🍵

Grainne Carson, pictured with employee Mary, opened Patisserie G on Beechmount Avenue in August 2021 and, since then, has established a number of community initiatives.

That's included daily breakfast clubs, a book club and a weekly young entrepreneur club for local kids.

After having many young people call in to ask for a job, saying they had been struggling to gain employment due to a lack of experience, Grainne decided to take matters into her own hands.

This week, she started a barista training course for young people, and says she's been "absolutely inundated" with requests to get involved, from young people to those in their mid-20s who are also struggling to find employment.

After being shown how to make hot drinks such as lattes, flat whites and cappucinos, next up for the young people on the course is iced drinks, before an evening serving guests, where they will be able to get some front of house experience.

Grainne has been on a mission to give back to the community after her cafe was saved from closure in 2022 when a local businessman stepped in to help pay the bills.

She's now keen to see other local businesses open their doors to give young people work experience in different industries.

"We would love to get other local businesses on board with this too, to see if they could take a child on for a few days' work experience. It would just give them the experience of seeing how other places are run," she added.

"It doesn't have to be a cafe, it could be a corner shop, barbers, a beauty salon. Just to give them that wee bit of experience in the real world."
