Turning data into digestate!

The future of food waste recycling just got a little smarter. Huge congratulations to BiofuelAi on winning the UK Government's prestigious Manchester Prize and securing £1 million in funding to help accelerate AI innovation in the anaerobic digestion sector.

Their AI-powered platform is helping biogas operators unlock more renewable energy from food waste and organic materials by providing real-time insights into what's happening inside digesters.

The results from pilot sites are impressive. Up to 10% increase in revenue and 28% reduction in carbon emissions.

At Keenan Recycling, we're passionate about the role anaerobic digestion plays in creating a cleaner, more circular economy. Food waste isn't waste at all when it's transformed into renewable energy, biomethane and nutrient-rich biofertiliser.

Innovations like AI, digital twins and predictive modelling are helping the AD industry become even more efficient, unlocking greater environmental benefits from every tonne of food waste collected.

Say 'I do' to less food waste!

Wedding season is all about making memories, but it can also create a surprising amount of food waste.

Research from Sainsbury's found that around 10% of all wedding food is thrown away, with the average couple wasting £488 worth of food on their big day.

The biggest culprits? Wedding cake, edible favours, evening buffets and leftover drinks.

Wedding cake remains one of the biggest challenge with 45% of couples said most of their wedding cake was left over.

Reducing wedding food waste doesn't mean cutting back on celebrations. Simple steps such as confirming guest numbers early, being realistic about evening buffets, avoiding duplicate desserts and planning for leftovers can make a huge difference.

At Keenan Recycling, we believe the best wedding gift for the planet is ensuring unavoidable food waste is collected separately and recycled in a sustainable manner.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT starts at school!

At Keenan Recycling, we love seeing young minds embrace sustainability from an early age.

From learning how to separate food waste and recycling correctly, to understanding the bigger picture of protecting our planet, schools across the UK are helping build habits that can last a lifetime.

What’s especially encouraging is that many students already understand that reducing waste isn’t just about recycling. It’s about creating a better future, conserving resources, and improving quality of life for generations to come.

By making recycling and food waste separation part of everyday school life, children learn that small actions can make a big difference. And when those lessons travel home, entire families can become part of the sustainability journey.

The future of food waste reduction, recycling, and the circular economy starts with education and it's genuinely heartwarming to see so many young people passionate about protecting the world they'll inherit.

The future looks brighter when sustainability is on the school timetable!

Turning waste into taste!

A big shoutout to IKEA for thinking outside the bin with its new "Great British Bin Juice" initiative transforming surplus British apples into a limited-edition apple juice and proving that perfectly good food can still have a valuable second life.

What's even more impressive is the impact of IKEA's partnership with Winnow, whose AI-powered food waste technology helps kitchens track exactly what's being wasted, enabling teams to take action and reduce food waste at source.

Over £14 million saved by IKEA UK over the past decade with significant reductions in food waste. Carbon savings equivalent to removing 2,300 cars from the road.

At Keenan Recycling, we're passionate about the food waste hierarchy. The best food waste is the food waste that never happens. But when food waste is unavoidable, it can still be transformed into something valuable, whether that's delicious apple juice, renewable energy, or nutrient-rich biofertiliser.

It's encouraging to see organisations like IKEA, Winnow and WRAP helping businesses and consumers rethink what we throw away and recognise the value still left in our resources.

Now that's what we call grate innovation!

What if yesterday's food waste became tomorrow's gourmet ingredient?

Researchers are increasingly exploring how food industry by-products and surplus materials can be transformed through fermentation into entirely new food products. From cheese alternatives and protein-rich ingredients to flavour-packed food innovations.

Researchers at Stanford University have developed a cheese-like product using fermentation and food industry by-products, creating a delicious alternative inspired by traditional Pecorino and Parmesan cheeses.

They're not alone.

Fermtech in the UK is transforming discarded cocoa shells into cocoa powder alternatives.

MOA foodtech in Spain is using AI and fermentation to unlock value from leftover pea protein by-products.

MicroHarvest in Germany is converting sugar industry by-products into premium pet food ingredients.

Mottainai Recycling Food Tech in Singapore is creating meat and seafood alternatives from ingredients that would otherwise be overlooked or discarded.

At Keenan Recycling, we see this principle every day. While edible surplus food should always be redistributed wherever possible, unavoidable food waste can still play an important role in the circular economy.

Four food industry leaders helping tackle food waste

Food waste is one of the biggest environmental challenges facing the food sector, but some of the world's best-known brands are proving that surplus food can be managed more sustainably.

A special shoutout to these organisations for helping drive positive change:

🍕 Pizza Hut – Through food donation initiatives and food waste recycling programmes, Pizza Hut continues to divert significant volumes of food waste from disposal. We're proud that Keenan Recycling has supported Pizza Hut restaurants across the UK by collecting and recycling unavoidable food waste through anaerobic digestion, turning it into renewable energy and biofertiliser.

☕ Starbucks – Its Foodshare programme has helped redistribute millions of meals while preventing food waste from ending up in landfill.

🌯 Chipotle Mexican Grill – By preparing food in smaller batches and donating surplus food where possible, Chipotle is helping reduce waste across its operations.

🍝 Olive Garden (Darden Restaurants) – Through food donation, composting and waste reduction initiatives, the business has diverted millions of pounds of food from disposal.

The food waste hierarchy is clear i.e. prevent waste where possible, redistribute edible surplus food, and recycle unavoidable food waste through solutions such as anaerobic digestion.

When food waste can no longer be eaten, it still has value. Through anaerobic digestion, food waste can be transformed into renewable energy.

33 buses worth of food waste recycled in a month! That's a wheelie big result.

Just one month after launching its new food waste collection service, more than 257 tonnes of food waste have already been diverted from disposal (the equivalent weight of 33 double-decker buses). This is a fantastic achievement by Erewash Borough Council and its residents.

This is a powerful example of what can be achieved when councils, collection partners and local communities work together to embrace food waste recycling.

As part of the UK's Simpler Recycling reforms, food waste is no longer being treated as rubbish. Instead, it can be transformed into valuable resources through processes such as anaerobic digestion, generating renewable energy and producing nutrient-rich fertiliser for agriculture.

The council reports that over 50 tonnes of food waste are now being collected every week, helping to reduce methane emissions from decomposing food waste and supporting a more circular economy.

Major service changes are never without challenges, and Erewash Borough Council has openly acknowledged the scale of what was a "mammoth operation". The early results show that the effort is already delivering meaningful environmental benefits.

Congratulations to Erewash Borough Council.

Cut the methane, not the corners!

The recent spell of hot weather across the UK has been a welcome reminder that summer is on its way. But it’s also a reminder of a much bigger challenge facing all of us: climate change.

One of the lesser-known contributors to global warming is food waste.

When food waste ends up in landfill, it breaks down and releases methane, a greenhouse gas that is significantly more potent than carbon dioxide in trapping heat in the atmosphere.

While methane doesn't stay in the atmosphere as long as CO₂, its impact is far more intense in the short term, making it a key target in the fight against climate change.

The good news? Food waste doesn't have to become a problem.

Through anaerobic digestion (AD), food waste can be transformed into renewable energy and nutrient-rich fertiliser, helping to reduce methane emissions while creating valuable resources for the circular economy.

At Keenan Recycling, every food waste collection helps divert material away from landfill and towards a more sustainable future. From hospitality and healthcare to manufacturing and retail, businesses across the UK are playing an important role in reducing emissions one food waste caddy at a time.

As temperatures rise, so does the importance of making the most of our resources and preventing unnecessary waste.

Stop feeding the bin!

Across Wales and France, there’s a growing recognition that food waste should never be the first option. From stronger recycling habits to smarter redistribution of edible surplus food, the shift towards a truly circular economy is gathering real momentum.

At Keenan Recycling, we believe food waste should always follow the right hierarchy:
🥕 Feed people where possible
♻️ Recycle unavoidable food waste responsibly
⚡ Turn it into renewable energy and nutrient-rich fertiliser through anaerobic digestion

Wales has already shown the UK what’s possible through positive recycling behaviours and food waste collections, while France has demonstrated the power of putting redistribution first. Together, they prove that food waste isn’t just “waste”. It’s a valuable resource when managed properly.

The future isn’t about simply throwing less away… it’s about creating smarter systems where surplus food finds plates before bins.

☀️ Things are heating up across the UK… but so is the nation’s food waste!

While everyone’s enjoying the sunshine, our teams at Keenan Recycling are working hard across the country collecting commercial food waste and keeping bins fresh during the warmer weather.

Top tip for businesses during the heatwave?
🗑️ Keep lids closed
📦 Use cardboard or liners to absorb liquids
🧼 Clean bins regularly
♻️ And don’t let food waste “stew” for too long!

We’re helping businesses turn food waste into renewable energy through anaerobic digestion even when temperatures are sizzling.
