Restaurant du Tibet Pema Thang

Pemathang restaurant de Tibet is an initiative of Namgyal Lhamo and Chukie Tethong. These two sisters were the first Tibetans in exile to start a restaurant outside India. In 1981 they took over the vegetarian health food restaurant ‘de Werfkring’ in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Ten years later they founded Pemathang Restaurant du Tibet. At that time it was the second Tibetan restaurant in Paris. In

the late nineties they began Pemathang Guesthouse and restaurant in Dharamsala, India. Pemathang, restaurant du Tibet is run by their family members, while Namgyal Lhamo looks after the Dutch restaurant and Chukie Tethong looks after the Indian Pemathang. They both keep a keen interest in the Paris restaurant, which is formally managed by Namgyal Lhamo. Both sisters had their education in the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts in Dharamsala. There they studied for many years under the great masters of Tibetan music and opera. When in the nineties they were asked for their singing talents to play a role in Jean Jacques Arnaud’s ‘Seven Years in Tibet’, they both picked up again their individual singing careers. Today they give concerts in many countries and they have launched a nummer of CDs. Pemathang Restaurant is proud to always play their newest CDs. Both sisters also acted in a number of documentary and fiction movies on Tibet. When their lama brother – Shedpa Rimpoche – recently fell ill, Namgyal Lhamo decided to make their long time wish come true and turn Pemathang, restaurant du Tibet into a completely vegetarian restaurant, like Pemathang’s Dutch and Indian sister restaurants. Since then Rimpoche’s health improved tremendously and the family is happy to collect positive karma for not selling meat in the restaurant.
