A bottle from Domaine d’Auvenay, Lalou Bize-Leroy Leroy — where the living terroir transcends itself, becoming something deeply human and profoundly alive.
Opened in the quiet warmth of summer, it revealed itself with an almost extraordinary luminosity — generous, vibrant, profound, utterly graceful and radiant.
Its freshness carried the season with remarkable poise, while its depth rose naturally from the terroir. Biodynamics seemed translated into life, energy and an unmistakable sense of place, with something rare and quietly alive within the glass — breathing, singing, almost speaking.
This feeling comes to me, in part, from having watched Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy over the years — through her tastings, her tables, her encounters with w**e, and that extraordinary presence that is simply hers. Her work and her w**es seem to speak through her as much as she speaks of them.
And there are moments, at the table, when such a w**e seems to ask for nothing but presence — a rare privilege, a solemn instant in which everything around it falls quietly away.
Then comes a silence in which the glass echoes the quiet music of the vines and the w**e — a music one slowly tries to hear, to approach, to apprehend, until it becomes a moment of rare grace.
Carrying Burgundy in its most luminous and unadorned voice — a rare and magnificent expression of Burgundy, elevated by time into something almost timeless.
