Mixing up our smoothies, one smoothie at a time 🥭

Taking inspo from different flavours and keeping it local by using fruits in season.

Today’s star: mangoes – sweet, juicy, and packed with nutrition - Vit C for immunity, fibre and a natural source of energy.

I’ve also added chia seeds - good for gut health, great source of omega-3 fatty acids and rich in plantbased protein!

When you change your eating habits to buy majority of your food from our local markets, you don’t just support farmers and vendors, there is a whole ecosystem that you support like Claudius and his family.

They push through heat, rain, long hours and heavy expectations.

For many of them, this is their only source of income.

So next time you’re at the market, choose to support them.

Please pay them fairly.
Don’t bargain them down.
A few extra dollars to us is a full meal for them.

Let’s appreciate the people who keep our markets moving.

Today I met Mr Ali, who shared a beautiful part of his journey with me.

After working in New Zealand for many years, he chose to return home to Fiji to continue farming; the work that truly feeds his passion and purpose.

His story is a reminder of the heart, dedication, and love our local farmers put into every crop. When we support them, we support families, communities, and the future of Fiji’s agriculture and good food for future generations.

Doing the Daniel Fast? Want affordable filling, protein-packed meals? Try lentils and legumes!

Legumes include Lentils, Beans (kidney, black, navy, pinto, mung), Soybeans (edamame, tofu, tempeh) and Dhal.

Lentils, beans, chickpeas = plant protein powerhouse. They’re affordable and versatile and can be used in soups, stews, curries, salads. They’re high in fiber and low in fat and pairs perfectly with local, in-season veggies. Pumpkin soup with dhal is my fav and my recipe is:

Cook dhal and pumpkin together and add onions, salt and pepper. When it’s cooked and cool, blend half and then mix it in again. This way you have something to chew on and feels more filling. Then add moca, Chinese cabbage, bele or any veg you want and have with dalo, cassava or kumala or just on its own!

Next Monday, my family and I begin the Daniel Fast — a time of prayer, discipline, and intentional nourishment for both body and spirit.

The fast is inspired by Daniel 1:12:
“Please test your servants for ten days: Let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink.”

This journey is also about choosing local, in-season fruits and vegetables grown in our soil and shared through our communities. From rourou and kumala to bananas, pineapple, pumpkin, cassava and more, all grown right here in Fiji.

Eating local means supporting our farmers, reducing waste, and honouring what God has already provided.

This fast is not about restriction, but realignment which includes slowing down, praying more intentionally, and returning to what is wholesome, nourishing, and true.

At Food Culture Fiji, Christmas is more than just festive feasts and celebrations. It’s a time to remember the true meaning of the season; the birth of Jesus Christ and a message of love, hope, humility, and new beginnings.

As we gather with family and friends, let’s take a moment to be grateful for the gift of life, for the people around our tables, and for the blessings we sometimes take for granted.

This season is also a gentle reminder to look after the bodies we’ve been given. Enjoy the Christmas treats, but do so with balance and choose nourishing local foods, stay hydrated, keep moving, and rest well. A healthy body helps us serve, love, and live fully.

From all of us at Food Culture Fiji, we wish you a Christmas filled with peace, joy, meaningful connection, and good health. May your hearts be full and your tables blessed.
