Happy Birthday to Peter Sipeli, a man whose work has become woven into the cultural heartbeat of modern Fiji.

Through The Poetry Shop Fiji, you didn’t just create poetry events, you created permission. Permission for young Fijians to speak, to write, to question, to heal, to rage, to dream out loud. You opened doors for voices that had been waiting in silence, especially across the western side of Fiji where poetry and spoken word were too often overlooked or treated as distant things. You brought art closer to ordinary people, you made literature feel alive, local, raw and ours.

And through Guided Walking Tours, Suva , you transformed storytelling itself into cultural preservation. You showed people that Suva is not just a city to pass through, it is memory, contradiction, resistance, humour, migration, struggle, survival and beauty all at once. Your tours don’t hide Fiji behind postcards, they reveal its soul.

What makes your impact indelible is not simply the projects you built, it’s the courage behind them. You have always been outspoken, introspective and unapologetically artistic. You have used poetry as advocacy, storytelling as activism and vulnerability as strength. In a country where silence is often easier, you chose honesty. In spaces where conformity is rewarded, you chose authenticity.

Your mark on Fijian culture cannot really be measured in numbers, but if it could, it would look something like this,
Hundreds of emerging poets encouraged to share their voices,
Thousands of people introduced to a deeper, more truthful Fiji,
Entire creative circles formed because you made space for them,
Conversations started that otherwise would never have happened,
Young artists finally seeing themselves reflected in Pacific storytelling.

That is legacy work.

And beyond all of this, our friendship matters deeply to us. Knowing someone who lives so fiercely through art changes people. You remind everyone around you that culture is not static, it breathes through brave people willing to speak honestly about who we are. Your life’s work has helped shape Fiji’s contemporary arts movement into something more inclusive, more reflective and more fearless.

You are a poet, yes,
But also a bridge-builder,
A cultural agitator,
A guardian of stories,

A creator of spaces where people feel seen.

May this next year bring you the same thing you have given so many others, inspiration, community, tenderness, laughter, wild creativity and the certainty that your work matters immensely.

Happy birthday Peter. Fiji’s arts scene is richer because you refused to stay quiet. And everyone lucky enough to walk beside you, through poems, conversations, city streets or friendship, carries a little more courage because of it.

A Night of Poetry, Food and Connection at Small Plates
By Edward Lovo

Last night, the walls of Small Plates came alive with stories, emotions, laughter, and raw honesty as poetry lovers and food enthusiasts gathered for an unforgettable Poetry Slam Night.

Hosted by Small Plates and organised by The Poetry Shop Fiji, the evening created a space where strangers became listeners, listeners became friends, and words became something deeply personal.

From poems about heartbreak and love to reflections on mental health, struggle, healing, and hope, every performance carried a piece of someone’s truth.

The atmosphere was electric yet comforting.

Between the clinking of glasses, shared meals, and bursts of applause, voices filled the room with courage and creativity.

Familiar faces from across Fiji’s creative community joined the crowd, including Sachiko Soro, alongside many guests who simply came to experience something different.

Poet Anaseini Taka captured the spirit of the evening perfectly when she described the gathering as “broken plates being glued together.” Through that powerful imagery, she reflected on how people from different walks of life across Fiji often carry their struggles, heartbreaks and stories quietly and separately, but for one night, poetry became the glue that brought strangers together in the same space.

More than just a competition or a night of prizes, the event created an atmosphere where people felt free to speak, willing to listen, and connected through shared emotion and experience. It was a reminder that art still has the power to bring people together in the most deeply human way.

To everyone who shared their voice, supported a performer, or simply sat quietly and took it all in, Vinaka vakalevu for making the night what it was.
Here’s to more nights of poetry, connection, good food, and safe spaces for local voices to be heard.
