One of Lapland’s most magical natural phenomena: the Northern Lights.
The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are known in Finnish as revontulet, meaning “fox fires.” In old Finnish folklore, people believed the lights appeared when a magical Arctic fox ran across the snowy fells, its tail brushing the snow and sending glowing sparks up into the night sky.
This dancing light in the Arctic sky occurs when charged particles from the sun collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. The result is a breathtaking display of colors — most commonly green, but sometimes also pink, purple, and even red.
In Lapland, the best time to witness the aurora is from early autumn to early spring, with the best chances between September and March.
