Japanese Teriyaki Pork (Buta no Teriyaki) – A Story of Sweet Fire and Tradition

The word teriyaki comes from two Japanese terms: “teri” meaning shine and “yaki” meaning grilled. Long ago, fishermen and home cooks along Japan’s coastal towns began brushing meats and seafood with a sauce of soy, mirin, and sugar as they grilled them over charcoal. The heat caramelized the sauce, creating a glossy coating that shimmered under the firelight — a signature look that gave teriyaki its name.

On this Thursday Sway was honored once again being the appointed afternoon tea supplier for KONE Headquarters in Keilaniemi in celebration of Chinese New Year of Horse. 🧧

Being part of such a meaningful and joyful occasion is a privilege for Sway and we are proud to bring authentic Asian flavors to the celebration: Chicken Gyoza, Prawn Fritters, Pork Siu Mai, Spring Rolls and a selection of delicate dairy&fruit cakes.

Dà Pán Jī (大盘鸡), meaning "Big Plate Chicken," is a famous dish from Xinjiang, China. One popular story says that Dà Pán Jī was invented in the 1980s or 1990s by restaurant owners along the highways of Xinjiang. The truck drivers traveling long distances across the vast, arid Xinjiang region needed a filling and affordable meal. Small roadside eateries began serving a rich, hearty, and flavorful stew made with chicken, potatoes, bell peppers, often served with hand-pulled noodles. The dish blends influences from both Han Chinese and Uyghur cuisine, reflecting Xinjiang’s diverse cultural and culinary landscape.
