Metuchen Disco Soup brought our community together to turn rescued food into local action.

Together, we rescued 373.4 lbs of fresh produce, served 266 bowls of soup, supported 40 food pantry clients with leftover soup and fresh produce, composted 77.1 lbs of food scraps, welcomed 150 attendees, mobilized 50 volunteers, and worked with 10 partner organizations. Most importantly, zero rescued food was sent to trash.

Now we’re asking residents, local businesses, and community partners to keep the momentum going.

At Metuchen Disco Soup, we’re rescuing 200 lbs of fresh produce.

That is roughly equivalent to more than a year of food waste from one person.

But this is not about guilt.

Food waste happens for normal reasons: busy weeks, changing plans, confusing date labels, leftovers we forget, vegetables hidden at the back of the fridge, or buying more than we end up using.

The good news is that small household habits can make a real difference.

✅ Try one this week:

🛒 Check what you already have before shopping.
👀 Move older food to the front.
🍲 Use leftovers before cooking something new.
🧊 Freeze food before it spoils.
🫶 Share or donate safe surplus food when possible.
♻️ Compost unavoidable scraps.
