No cooking for me today ! ❌ 🧑‍🍳

Almost 40 years ago, I had a pretty nasty fall from a horse and badly damaged my ankle. It left me with a vein that, over the years, became more than just something I didn't like looking at. It swelled, ached and, as time went on, reminded me daily that injuries have a habit of catching up with us 🐎

For decades, both Mum and Dad would say exactly the same thing: "Get that sorted. It'll come back and bite you when you're older."

Well... I'm older now 🤭

Before Mum passed away last year, we finally started the process of getting it investigated. As a chef, I can spend hours on my feet, often standing in one spot, lifting heavy pots, equipment and trays, and lately my left leg has become increasingly grumbly. It was time.

So today, as long as there are no more strikes today as I am mentally prepared well almost 🫣 then by lunchtime that troublesome vein should finally be gone. 🤞

I'll admit something though... I don't do hospitals well. I'm the one who gets anxious even when I'm supporting someone else, so trying to keep myself calm for my own procedure has been quite a challenge.🥺

Who knows... perhaps when it's all healed I'll have lovely legs like my mum did, and a little less like my dad's well-worn ones! ❤️

To say I'm scared is a huge understatement, but I'm also hopeful that this is the start of feeling more comfortable, both at work and in everyday life. 💪

Wish me luck... I'll see you on the other side. 🤞

July 2026 Gazette is out now! 📣

As the summer holidays arrive, Lanzarote’s resorts are likely to start buzzing with holiday-makers and, especially, families with children.

It’s good to see kids in the resorts, and it’s something that the island has perhaps neglected in recent years, when Lanzarote’s tourism strategy has been to position itself as a destination for the more mature visitor.

That policy makes sense – family holidays are limited to about 12 weeks a year, but Lanzarote’s season lasts all year. Months like October and February are increasingly popular among visitors, few of whom will be bringing school-age children with them.

The island has focused on widening its appeal with attractions such as food fairs, endurance sporting events and hiking routes. These are all great, but they’re not likely to appeal to many children.

There are an increasing number of hotels in the resorts that prohibit kids, guaranteeing older tourists a stay that is less likely to be spoiled by the patter of tiny feet and the screams of tiny lungs, but this also makes sense – hotels that cater for children usually need to invest in facilities and activities that allow parents to take a well-earned break, and this isn’t cheap.

Then there’s cruise tourism, which is increasing every year. When a big ship is moored at Arrecife you’ll see plenty of curious, well-behaved cruise tourists on the island, but I can’t remember ever seeing any children get off a cruiser.

The ironic thing about this, of course, is that Lanzarote loves children. If you’ve raised a child here, you’ll know how they’re welcomed in almost any restaurant, at almost every event. It’s an island where complete strangers will stop to admire babies in prams, where children run wild at fiestas and play in the street.

Of course they can be annoying at times, but it’s also wonderful to see kids on the beaches, mucking around with sand, peering into rockpools and doing the beach things kids always do; let’s look forward to the presence of families and kids in the resorts, as they make memories that will last a lifetime, memories that have brought them back as adults over and over again.
