Back in 1759, a man named Arthur Guinness signed a bold 9,000-year lease on a small, run-down brewery at St. James’s Gate in Dublin. He wasn’t just renting a space — he was making a statement. Arthur had a vision for brewing that went far beyond the ales of the time.

At first, he brewed traditional ales, but by the 1770s, he turned his focus to a new, darker style called porter. This rich, robust beer quickly became popular across Ireland and Britain. Arthur perfected his recipe, and over time, his porter evolved into what we now know as Guinness stout — famous for its deep colour, creamy head, and unmistakable flavour.

From those early days in Dublin, Guinness grew into a global phenomenon. By the 19th century, barrels of Guinness were shipped across oceans, reaching Africa, the Caribbean, and North America. Today, it’s enjoyed in over 150 countries and has become a symbol of Irish pride around the world.
