It would be both convenient – as a marketing stunt – and probably more attractive to tell you about the struggle we had to go through and how we started from zero (well, that is true though); but the reality is: our story is a lot simpler than that. Our founder, and master barista, affectionately known as “Yehia” by friends and family decided to quit the corporate world abroad and his secure engin
eering 9 to 5 job to follow his passion and share it with everyone back home in Egypt as he strongly believes that a global brand can start right from here, from Alexandria. Because good coffee should be the trend! We strongly believe quality coffee should be available to everyone and not a luxury limited to the few, this is reflected in the experience we strive to provide to every single customer who walks into our signature shop.
“From need to desire”
So, how did it all start? (Not) surprisingly, it was all because of the “right” cup of coffee…a simple sip and a eureka moment. Yehia tried specialty coffee for the first time during one of his trips around the world and realized that there is more to coffee than the average products we all tend to think as of “good quality”; we’ve been used to pay for the brand name and accept mediocre beans quality, but that is about to change. After extensive training and research about coffee beans and what makes for a perfect cup of coffee, the idea of hashtag was born, the more Yehia traveled the more he was convinced: Egypt deserved good coffee, after all, Egyptians have always been known to be coffee connoisseurs. He started sourcing coffee from all over the world, and we believe to have some of the best quality beans around, but that’s not enough. We work around the clock to bring the best coffee-making techniques and tools to the country; whether it is dripping, or brewing, or high-quality coffee machines, we want to ensure that our patrons' experience is always the best there is, and with that, set the bar within the country to a whole new level. We’ve been told we are too ambitious and that our branding could have been better if it targeted a different audience, but we stand firm in our belief: Hashtag can become a global brand and it can all start right here, in Egypt. Good coffee, we get it, but what else? We want to make every experience at our signature store, not only unique but also interesting. Yehia always takes the time to explain about the beans available in the shop - they change frequently as we always endeavor to sort nothing but the best. We believe coffee is a passion and we want to share that with you, and that’s why we have information about the coffee sorting process in our shop, coffee-related literature, workshops, and soon activities for the little ones. For us, coffee is a lot more than the end product, it is the attention to the details and the love and passion that go into making the right cup of coffee, and we want to share that with you.
