🎄 Christmas Eve in Greece

Christmas Eve in Greece is filled with warmth, tradition, and a quiet sense of anticipation. The day begins calmly, as families prepare their homes and kitchens for the celebrations to come. The smell of homemade sweets like melomakarona and kourabiedes fills the air, reminding everyone that Christmas is near.

One of the most beloved traditions is the Kalanta, the Christmas carols. Children go from house to house singing and playing small instruments, receiving sweets or coins in return. Their voices bring life to neighborhoods and villages, connecting generations through song.

In the evening, many people attend church services, as Christmas is deeply rooted in faith and tradition. Homes are decorated not only with Christmas trees, but often with boats, a uniquely Greek symbol representing hope, journeys, and new beginnings.

Did you know that 6th January In Greece’s celebration of the lights “Ta Fota” (in Greek) is a holiday?!?
Also known as the Epiphany, Theofania, the Celebration of the Lights, or ta Fota (the Lights) is held on January 6 and is one of the most sacred and holiest Feast Days on the Greek Orthodox Calendar.
The Baptism of the Lord is also called the feast of the Theofania, since during the Baptism of the Lord the people saw the Holy Trinity.
Today is tradition, Priests will also throw a Holy Cross into the sea or lake and a dove is also released into the sky, then the faithful jump into the water to try to find the Holy Cross. The person who retrieves the Holy Cross and returns it to the priest is said to be blessed for the year ahead.
