Look who’s finally making his way back to the Cellar.
It’s been far too long since we’ve had STEHEN KAVANGH downstairs, but tonight the wait is over.

Born and raised in Dublin, Stephen grew up with music all around him. He started on the tin whistle as a kid, picked up the guitar and harmonica along the way and was already busking the streets of Dublin in his teens. That might explain why his musical compass has never pointed in just one direction.

There’s plenty of Ireland in what Stephen does, but a night with him can wander happily through Folk, Rock, Country, Blues and Pop. Add his own songwriting, a voice that’s been around a few pubs in its time and a harmonica never too far away, and you’ve got a pretty good idea of what Friday night looks like.

Or perhaps you haven’t - best come down and find out.

Pub open from 5pm.
Venue open from 8pm.
Live music from about 9pm.

Free admission, hat donations welcome!

WHO SAID IRISH PUBS WERE OLD-FASHIONED?

There’s something new happening in Hamburg’s Irish Pub scene, and we’re rather pleased to be part of it: PUBTRAIL goes live TODAY!

From October to December, five Hamburg pubs are taking part in the first PubTrail pilot, including yours truly here at the Irish Rover.

The idea is simple: a modern network built around Irish Pubs and the people who enjoy them. Discover pubs around Hamburg, check in when you visit, build your own trail and collect points and badges along the way. Turns out groundhoppers aren’t the only ones who get to collect things.

And because collecting badges is grand, but a pint is better, there are rewards too. During the Hamburg test phase, that means something particularly useful:
Free pints of Guinness.

So have a look around, find the other pubs, start building your trail and see where it takes you.

We’ll be right here waiting for your first check-in.

PubTrail. Discover pubs. Build your trail. Join the community.

THREE GOOD REASONS TO HEAD TO THE ROVER

A slightly shorter programme this week, but there’s still plenty going on before we head into the weekend.

THURSDAY is PUB QUIZ night from 8pm, and this week we’ll keep the advice simple: read the question, trust your team and never change the answer at the last second. You know you’ll regret it. Teams of up to seven, no reservations, just come along and find yourselves a table.

Then on FRIDAY, STEPHEN KAVANAGH is finally back in the Celtic Cellar! Dublin born and raised in a family where music was never far away, Stephen has been playing since his Tin Whistle days as a kid, with guitar, harmonica and songwriting following soon after. Irish Folk, Rock, Pop, Country, Blues and whatever else finds its way into the room. With Stephen, you never quite know where the night will go, which is half the fun.

SATURDAY is a little different this week. The Celtic Cellar is booked for a private event, so there’s no public live music downstairs. The pub upstairs is open as usual though, so nobody needs to go thirsty.

And on SUNDAY, the instruments come back out for our weekly IRISH TRAD SESSION. Musicians around the table, tunes travelling around the room and a few pints alongside them. Just the way we like to finish the week.

Quiz on Thursday, Stephen back where he belongs on Friday, a pint upstairs on Saturday and tunes around the table on Sunday.

That’ll keep us going.

Some musicians come to the Rover to play a gig.

DECLAN O’CONNELL just comes home.

At this point, our good house ghost hardly needs an introduction. Declan has been part of this place for so long that a Saturday night with him in the Celtic Cellar feels less like booking an artist and more like making sure an old friend knows where his guitar is.

Raised in County Cork, Declan brings with him the songs Ireland has been singing for generations. The old ballads, pub songs and stories are never far away, but neither are Dylan, Johnny Cash, Neil Young and the American folk music he’s loved for just as long.

And that’s really what a night with Declan is about. Songs you know, songs you’d forgotten you knew, a few stories along the way and a room that usually ends up singing with him sooner or later.

No big introduction required.

Declan’s back in the Cellar tonight. That should tell you enough.

Some folk singers give you songs. KENAN FLANNERY gives you stories.

Born and raised in Cabra on Dublin’s northside, Kenan grew up with Irish ballads, reggae and ska constantly playing at home. Somewhere along the way, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt and Blaze Foley joined the party, and out of that rather fine mixture came a songwriter with a sound very much his own.

For Kenan, folk music has always been about the words first. Heartbreak, loneliness, love, life on the road, the small things people remember and the strange things you see when you spend enough time travelling. His songs can be dark, funny, tender and wonderfully rough around the edges, and his live shows have a habit of moving between laughter, singing along and those moments when the whole room simply listens.

And he’s certainly put in the miles. Ireland, the UK, Europe and the US, festival stages, sold-out Dublin shows and support slots with the likes of The White Buffalo, John R. Miller and The Wolfe Tones.

Tonight, the road brings him back to our Celtic Cellar.

A Dublin storyteller, a guitar and a room made for songs like these.

AUTUMN IS PUB SEASON

The evenings are getting darker, the jackets are coming back out and suddenly the idea of a warm pub, a proper pint and a room full of music makes even more sense than usual.

In other words: pub season is upon us.

We get things started on Thursday with our Pub Quiz from 8pm. Gather the usual suspects, find someone who knows things nobody reasonably needs to know and see where the evening takes you.

Then we’ve got two very different Irish voices heading down to the Celtic Cellar this weekend.

FRIDAY brings KENAN FLANNERY back to the Rover. The Dublin songwriter mixes the Irish ballads he grew up with and the American folk of John Prine and Townes Van Zandt, turning it all into songs and stories very much his own. He’s spent a fair chunk of the last couple of years touring Ireland, Europe, the UK and the US, and now he’s back in our little basement in Hamburg. We’ll happily take that.

On SATURDAY, DECLAN O'CONNELL takes over. Raised in County Cork, Declan has Irish folk running right through his repertoire, from the old songs and ballads to plenty of American folk classics. Dylan, Johnny Cash and Neil Young might find their way into the night too. A proper Irish pub singer with plenty of songs in the bag and no shortage of stories to go with them.

And then SUNDAY brings us back around the table for our weekly IRISH TRAD SESSION. Fiddles, whistles, tunes passed from one musician to the next and no real need to know where the evening is going.

Quiz, two nights of live Irish music and a Sunday session to finish it off.

Yep. Autumn will do nicely.

A BIT OF IRELAND FROM THE RUHR TONIGHT

Ireland and the Ruhrgebiet might be a fair few miles apart, but somehow they’ve always got along rather well.

Maybe it’s the rough charm. Maybe it’s the people. Maybe it’s simply a shared understanding that good music and a good pub can make almost any place feel like home.

Back in the 80s and 90s, the Ruhrgebiet had one of the liveliest Irish Pub scenes in Germany, and it was around that time that Christian Donovan caught the bug. The Pogues opened the door, then came the Dubliners, Planxty and a fascination with Irish and Scottish music and culture that never really went away.

Many years and countless songs later, Christian and Nina Heinrich are familiar faces on the folk scene, not least through their work with Ruhrgebiet-based Irish Folk band Sackville Street.

And tonight they’re bringing a bit of that Ruhrpott-Irish connection north to our Celtic Cellar.

Expect Irish and Scottish traditionals, Folk Classics and originals, with Nina’s voice moving from beautifully fragile to properly powerful, Christian on vocals and strings, and two musicians who have been living with these songs for a very long time.

From the Ruhrpott to the Celtic Cellar. Turns out, it’s not such a long way after all.

FIVE DAYS, PLENTY OF REASONS TO HEAD TO THE ROVER

We’re starting tonight with our Old-Time & Bluegrass Session from 7pm. Banjos pickin’, fiddles singin’, guitars keeping the rhythm and a Cellar full of tunes. Just the right way to get the week moving.

Thursday belongs to the Pub Quiz from 8pm. Gather the clever ones, the confident ones and that mate with a suspicious amount of completely useless knowledge.

Then the weekend heads downstairs. Friday brings Mense back to the Celtic Cellar, armed with Rock’n’Roll, pub and rock classics, his own songs and a repertoire big enough to take the night pretty much anywhere it wants to go.

On Saturday, Nina Heinrich & Christian Donovan make their way up from the Ruhrgebiet. Two familiar voices from Sackville Street, bringing Irish and Scottish traditionals, Folk Classics and originals to the Cellar. Two voices, strings and a fine collection of songs. That’ll do nicely.

And when Sunday comes around, we finish where a proper Rover week should: musicians around the table and tunes passing from one to the next at our weekly Irish Trad Session.

Bluegrass to Irish Trad, with a quiz and two cracking live nights in between.

Not a bad five days at the Rover.

Looks like Hamburg is behaving itself for once: mild, mostly dry and even a bit of sunshine. We’ll take it. The pints are pouring and there’s plenty happening at the Rover this week.

THURSDAY starts with our PUB QUIZ from 8pm. Gather your team, bring the useless knowledge you’ve been collecting for years and see if any of it finally pays off.

On FRIDAY, LARRY DONLON takes us through Irish ballads and trad, country favourites and a few classics from the 60s and 70s — guitar, banjo and mandolin in the hands of an Irishman who knows his way around a pub song.

Then SATURDAY gets a little dirtier as CARLEY’S WECK & RUIN roll into the Celtic Cellar from the UK. Jo and Tim Carley bring their wonderfully raw mix of early blues and dark roots — battered guitars, mandolin, washboard, kick drum and enough grit to rattle the glasses behind the bar.

And after all that, SUNDAY belongs to the tunes as our weekly IRISH TRAD SESSION gathers around the table once again.

Quiz, ballads, dirty blues and Irish Trad - not a bad way to spend a September weekend.

And judging by the forecast, you might want to bring a jacket.

We’ll take care of the shelter and the pints.

04/09/2026

The Cellar is open again and we’re starting the new live music season with a cracking mix of touring musicians, Irish voices and some familiar local faces.

04.09. IKE’S CREEK / USA
Tonite, IKE’S CREEK roll into Hamburg from the USA, bringing their blend of California Roots, Americana and Bluegrass to the Cellar. Led by multi-instrumentalist Korey Simeone, the Los Angeles band has earned a reputation for first-class picking, bluesy vocals and seriously fine musicianship.

11.09. LARRY DONLON / IRE
Irish Folk, pub classics and a few favourites from both sides of the Atlantic. Longford-born Larry has been playing and singing since his teens and is very much a familiar face around Hamburg these days.

12.09. CARLEY’S WRECK & RUIN / UK
A British duo serving up what they call “trashy roots”: raw, rhythmic blues with Delta grit, old-time country, rock’n’roll and a wonderfully dark edge.

18.09. MENSE
Rock’n’Roll, pub and rock classics with one thing firmly in mind: giving the room a good time. Expect everything from Chuck Berry and CCR to Tom Petty, The Beatles and his own songs.

19.09. NINA & CHRISTIAN
Irish & Scottish Folk — songs, tunes and plenty of Celtic spirit for a Saturday night downstairs.

25.09. KENAN FLANNERY / IRE
Dublin songwriter, storyteller and proper folk troubadour. Irish ballad roots meet American folk, raw guitar and a voice made for stories. Kenan has spent the past few years touring extensively across Ireland, the UK, Europe and the US.

26.09. DECLAN O’CONNELL / IRE
Songs & Stories from a Cork-born voice we’ve known for many years — Irish ballads alongside Dylan, Cash, Neil Young and the great American folk tradition.

And, of course, the Cellar isn’t only alive on Friday and Saturday nights.

Our Irish Trad Session is back every Sunday, the Old-Time & Bluegrass Session takes over every 1st and 3rd Wednesday, and upstairs it’s Pub Quiz every Thursday from 8pm.

Seven live acts, Trad and Bluegrass sessions throughout the month, and plenty of familiar faces coming back down the stairs.

September is looking mighty good.
