We work with sustainability and

traceability in mind. We aim to source our green coffees as direct as possible and want the main value to go to the coffee farmer. How we source our coffees:
We only buy handpicked arabica coffee beans of speciality grading. Preferably from Micro-Farms that operate with a strong focus on detail and a passion to improve their product. It is important to us to avoid too many merchants between farming and roasting so that most of the value goes back to the farm. The benefits of direct trade are far beyond of what fair trade could achieve. It also gives the farm a sustainable product and an identity to be proud of. We chose our beans for quality, cleanliness, sustainability and traceability. We buy in small quantities and fresh, seasonal crop. It is one of our principles to protect the value chain from crop to cup. This is the only way for all participants to benefit and to identify with a high value product. How we roast our coffees:
As a principle we dont blend any of our coffees - we want to showcase the characteristics of a single coffee and we promise to name the farmer on our bags. Our roast style is rather light to bring out the full flavour profile of a bean and not to change it. Our aim is to produce clean and consistent coffee of highest quality. We use a 1955 Probat Roast machine which has been completely overhauled with latest technology, direct engines, larger cooling tray and powerful air flow. We have added an environmentally friendly natural air filtration system. We use Cropster Roast Profiling software and check all stages of our roasting. We cup and taste our coffees systematically. Our baristas working with our coffees give us daily feedback on all roast batches and we are feeding all information back into our roast profiling system. There is a lot of science but also a lot of tasting and sharing of knowledge..

Our Schönhauser Cafe will finally move into the newly built space next door! 😃☕️ We know you all suffered from the situation, and the presentation of the café while we were basically housing under a huge construction site - needless to say: we suffered just as much and we apologise for the experience!

We are closing the location for one week and plan to re-open when all the interior work is done: 20th January. We were promised that all scaffolding will also disappear on that date (*sigh*). Here is to new beginnings: Schönhauser Allee was our second café and roastery. While there was no much happening in the neighborhood, it became a destination for outstanding coffee. Design-wise, we are sticking to our original features so we can re-use our old woods and materials. 👍🏼

About The Barn Berlin

We are local roasters and produce all our coffees and foods in Berlin. We collaborate closely with other local crafts people: From carpenter to farmers and to bakeries supplying us every day. The Barn is paying very high prices to coffee farmers so they can build a sustainable business and have a better life. We visit all farmers regularly and keep real relationships.

I have created The Barn in Berlin and have been growing the business ever since from our own strength. There are no investors behind our company. I have put in a lot of effort to create awareness for quality coffee so that everybody can understand that our coffee is no commercial bu****it. All my staff are driven to make our product better and better all the time.

We are a local company and over the past 8 years, we have created 60 jobs in Berlin. We are happy to take your application if you are interested in learning about coffee and hospitality! We train our crew so they can serve you as best they can.

My partner, Andreas, who is an integral part to the whole Barn story from the beginning, was born in Neukölln - in third generation. As for myself, my mother was born in Berlin but had to leave after the war. Because there was no food in Berlin and my grandmother died in childbed in 1942. Thats how I was born in the Lower Rhine Area near Emmerich.

We have recently opened a café in Friedelstraße 27, Neukölln. This is home to us.

Best 10 Coffee Roasters in the World! Honoured to be on Gear Patrols top ten list next to great coffee roasters from other countries. Many thanks! List attached.

Specialty Coffee is dividing more and more between those focusing on product quality, farm support, roast perfection and sharing knowledge with their staff and customers. And those focusing on the marketing and branding side or simply building beautiful shops. I wish that the latter would use their momentum to pay attention to their core product and to make it better. Which ultimately leads to farm relationships and to pay farmers a fair price for their fantastic work. Global coffee prices are rock bottom right now while at The Barn we are keeping our high pricing towards our coffee growers. This is the only way to get them out of the commodity world. Thank you!
