As part of our 20-year celebration, we’re continuing to share the stories of the people who have helped shape Harmony along the way. Karen has been part of that story since June 2005, when the hotel gardens were only beginning to take shape. Over the years, she and the gardening team have gradually transformed the landscape by learning from what already grows here — bringing native plants back into the gardens and creating more space for birds, insects, and wildlife to return. After taking landscaping design courses earlier in her career, observation and curiosity became Karen's main source of inspiration. For her, it all comes back to a simple idea: creating a place where people and nature can live together. “A safe haven for people and animals.”

During her Artist in Residence at Harmony, MJ Levy Dickson followed the quiet lines of this place — crab marks, worm trails, waves, shells, vegetation, and glass.

Her days moved between beach walks, garden studies, studio experiments, and a small glass installation at our front desk fountain. A residency shaped by process, discovery, and the beauty of not knowing exactly where the work will lead.

"I didn't want it to shout. I wanted it just to bring you in."

We shared a longer reflection on her residency, exploring her creative process, the conversations we had, and the discoveries that emerged along the way.

Rather than arriving with fixed ideas, MJ Levy came to Harmony with blank rolls of canvas and a willingness to let the place reveal itself. And over time, it did — through the sand, the native plants, and the water.

Come learn how tortillas are made with a corn mill, get hands-on with the masa, and watch a fogón built from scratch for slow-cooked pollo achiotado.
