From July through October, Costa Rica’s Pacific coast welcomes numerous humpback whales migrating from the Southern Hemisphere to breed, give birth and care for their calves in our warm tropical waters. During these months, visitors may witness mothers swimming alongside their young, spectacular breaches and powerful tail displays.

Although humpback whales are the most commonly observed species, other cetaceans may occasionally appear, including Bryde’s whales, pilot whales and several species of dolphins. These sightings are less frequent, making every encounter particularly exciting. Whale-watching season is a wonderful opportunity to experience Costa Rica’s extraordinary marine biodiversity in its natural environment. 🐋🌊

The white-faced capuchin monkey (Cebus imitator) is one of the four monkey species found in Costa Rica and one of the country's most intelligent and charismatic mammals. These highly adaptable primates are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, insects, small vertebrates, bird eggs, and even crabs along the coast. Known for their bold and curious personalities, white-faced capuchins are generally less shy than other monkey species, often approaching visitors out of curiosity while remaining wild animals. Living in complex social groups, they are remarkably interactive and communicative, using a wide range of vocalizations, facial expressions, and body language to coordinate with one another. Watching these agile monkeys leap effortlessly through the rainforest canopy is one of the most memorable wildlife experiences Costa Rica has to offer.

The praying mantis is one of nature's most fascinating insects, renowned for its distinctive appearance and remarkable hunting skills. With its triangular head, large compound eyes, and powerful front legs folded as if in prayer, the mantis is an exceptional ambush predator capable of catching insects, spiders, and even small vertebrates. It can rotate its head nearly 180 degrees to scan its surroundings, giving it outstanding vision and precision. Many mantis species also possess impressive camouflage, blending seamlessly with leaves, flowers, or twigs to avoid predators and surprise their prey.

This remarkable photograph captures one of nature’s most dramatic moments: a spider successfully catching a young cicada. The cicada’s vivid green coloration suggests that it has only recently reached its winged adult stage. Newly emerged cicadas often display bright, fresh colors that gradually darken into shades of brown or olive green as their exoskeleton hardens and they mature.

Although cicadas are fast and powerful flyers, spiders are patient and highly skilled predators. Using silk, speed, and precision, the spider immobilizes its prey before it can escape. While the scene may appear harsh, it represents an essential part of the tropical forest’s natural balance. Spiders help regulate insect populations while also serving as food for birds, reptiles, amphibians, and other animals.

Encounters like this reveal the fascinating interactions taking place every day within the rainforest—often hidden among leaves and branches. Every predator and prey species plays an important role in maintaining the health, diversity, and delicate equilibrium of this extraordinary ecosystem.

The Puma (Puma concolor costaricensis), the second-largest wild feline in Costa Rica after the jaguar, is one of the country's most adaptable and elusive predators. Found in habitats ranging from tropical rainforests to cloud forests and dry forests, this powerful cat is an exceptional hunter both on the forest floor and high in the treetop canopy. Its muscular body, remarkable agility, and impressive jumping ability allow it to pursue a wide variety of prey, including deer, peccaries, agoutis, monkeys, sloths, and other arboreal mammals. Equally comfortable stalking silently through dense undergrowth or climbing trees with ease, the puma demonstrates extraordinary versatility that enables it to thrive in Costa Rica's diverse ecosystems. Despite its strength and hunting prowess, the puma is rarely seen in the wild, making every encounter a remarkable reminder of the country's rich biodiversity and the importance of conserving its remaining forests.
