On our short trip to Weishan, we came across a Camellia reticulata tree growing in the courtyard of a Daoist temple on Weibaoshan Mountain. The tree is estimated to be around 400 years old and stands 18.43 meters tall. This is not a variety used for tea production; it is grown for its beautiful flowers. Since it was not blooming during our visit, I took picture of photographs on the wall with blooming tree.

In Yunnan's Red River Valley, the small county of Yuanjiang has become a surprising powerhouse for jasmine tea production. Thanks to a low-heat valley climate with intense sunlight, Yuanjiang jasmine blooms earlier than anywhere else in China—often by March—giving local producers a significant seasonal advantage.

The extreme environment produces large, nectar-rich blossoms with a bold, powerful fragrance. This pairs perfectly with Yunnan’s famous large-leaf tea cultivars, which are robust enough to absorb strong floral scents without being overwhelmed. Using the traditional "scenting" process (窨制), workers layer blooming flowers with tea leaves at night, when fragrance peaks. The tea undergoes multiple scentings, resulting in an intensely aromatic brew.

Unlike the light, grassy notes of other jasmine teas, Yuanjiang’s version offers a full-bodied experience. Whether processed as jasmine green tea or jasmine black tea, the flavor is described as sweet, smooth, and powerful. Some local producers even press the finished tea into cakes, mirroring Pu'er tea traditions. For tea lovers seeking something beyond the classics, Yuanjiang delivers a taste of Yunnan’s sun-drenched terroir—bold, fragrant, and unforgettable.

In the Hani language, “Pasha” translates to “towering mountain forest”—a fitting name for this verdant paradise. Spanning over 2,900 mu (about 193 hectares) of ancient tea gardens, it harbors trees aged 300–600 years, including the legendary “Pasha No. 1” tea king, believed to be 800 years old. Folklore holds that the ancestors of renowned Laobanzhang tea originated in these misty slopes.
Elevated at 1,850 meters and bathed in frequent mists and rains, Pasha’s unique microclimate shapes its exceptional teas. Unlike the robust bitterness of Laobanzhang, Pasha shines with elegant sweetness. The brew yields a brilliant golden liquor, where a subtle astringency fades rapidly into profound, lingering sweetness and a silky, full-bodied texture.

Hekai, meaning "the place that first sees the sun," is located in Menghai County, Yunnan. It is one of the best-preserved and largest contiguous ancient tea gardens in Xishuangbanna. Inhabited by the Lahu and Hani people, the tea gardens sit at altitudes between 1,400 and 1,800 meters. Lots of ancient tea trees thrive here, with many aged claimed between 200 and 800 years, creating a unique landscape described as "forest within tea, village within the garden".

Hekai Pu'er tea is known for its character: "bitterness stands out over astringency, with a short astringency that quickly turns into sweetness". It is full-bodied, energetically vibrant, and carries the essence of the wild mountains. The flavor is balanced, with bitterness dissolving quickly, leaving a lingering, enduring sweetness at the back of the throat.

Dali Old Town is a well-known tourist destination, and nearby Xiaguan needs no introduction for seasoned Pu’er tea drinkers—it’s home to the renowned Xia Guan Tea Factory. This time, we visited Heqing Village, famous for its silver craftsmanship.
There, we observed the entire process—from trading raw silver blocks to hand-shaping, carving, and polishing intricate designs using a variety of traditional tools. Some pieces take weeks or even months to complete, and with the high cost of silver, the final prices can be quite steep.
Following a recent surge in silver prices, some producers have sold off their entire stock as the result of panic buy. But now, many shops are struggling with sharply declining sales for that very same reason. We didn’t make any purchases ourselves but deeply admired the artisans’ skill and took a few contacts for future opportunities.

Baoshan is known for its towering, centuries-old tea trees; however, this was not our primary focus on this visit. Instead, we set out to explore organic tea plantations and black tea–producing factories. We tasted an intriguing Zhong Guo Hong made from the local “Mei Zhan” varietal, as the locals call it, as well as a ten-year-old Ye Sheng Hong, a black tea produced from wild tea trees.
While wandering through a local park, we came across a tourist-oriented tea shop serving black tea from old trees, complete with a promotional video showcasing the region’s tea culture. On our final day, we visited the largest tea factory in the area to sample their production. There, we had the opportunity to try a black tea from 2007, presented to us as evidence that even roasted leaves can retain their flavor for a long time when properly stored.

Dehong — enjoying local teas and regional cuisine. We visited our partner tea producer, who this year is experimenting with shu puer small-basket fermentation. As always, we tasted a variety of teas, including some particularly intriguing ones like *Zhong Guo Hong*, a blend of Dehong’s wild varietal and Taiwanese oolong varietal. We also had the opportunity to sample an experimental batch of oolong crafted by a Taiwanese tea master using a local tea cultivar. In ceramic jars - suan cha.

Tengchong is best known for its volcanoes, hot springs, and jade jewelry, but for us, this place holds a different kind of significance. The region is home to vast plantations of Taiwanese tea bush varietals, making it an important area for oolong production. We’ve been fortunate to discover new sources of Hong Oolong, GABA, and other related teas — many crafted by Taiwanese tea masters who travel here for the harvest season.
What truly sets Tengchong apart is its unique terroir: the high altitude of 1,800–2,200 meters and its rich black volcanic soil, both of which contribute to the remarkable flavor and quality of the teas grown here.
