🍵 MATCHA INDUSTRY INSIGHT #08
Ceremonial, Premium, or Culinary? Don't Choose Matcha by Name Alone.
“Ceremonial grade” sounds impressive. But what does it actually tell a professional buyer?
One of the most confusing areas of the international matcha market is grading terminology.
Ceremonial.
Premium.
Culinary.
Barista.
Baking.
Industrial.
Different suppliers may use these terms differently.
That means buyers should look beyond the label.
Instead, evaluate the product according to its intended application.
For example:
🍵 Straight drinking:
Flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, and umami become critical.
🧋 Latte and beverages:
Color, flavor strength, solubility, and consistency may become more important.
🍰 Bakery and desserts:
Color, stability, flavor intensity, and cost efficiency can be key.
🏭 Food manufacturing:
Specifications, safety, consistency, and supply capacity may dominate the decision.
No single matcha is “best” for every application.
The right question is not: “What is your highest grade?”
It is:
“What matcha is right for my product?”
Three or four matcha bowls labeled visually as Drinking / Beverage / Dessert / Food Manufacturing.
Please share your application, and I can share what characteristics I would prioritize when sourcing matcha.
