Dear friends of Capital M,
It is with much sadness that we write to let you know that our Beijing restaurant Capital M will be closing on September 17, 2017. M on the Bund and Glam are unaffected by the Beijing closure — it’s business as usual in Shanghai.
One of the great pleasures of working in the hospitality world is sharing the joy that is created under our roofs. We are very proud of what we have achieved together as a team at Capital M, and feel very privileged to have created fond memories and shared many remarkable occasions and special events with our guests over the past 8 years. We would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt thanks for being with us on this journey, your support means so much to us.
We will still serve brunch on our last day of business at Capital M. Until then reservations can be made as normal at [email protected]. We hope you will come visit us before we close.

Kind regards from the whole team at Capital M

At home in Hong Kong and clearing up old papers…and look what we found! Old mementos from the very first 'M' restaurant in Hong Kong, M at the Fringe (1989-2010...RIP).

Here is the menu from June 30 1997, 20 years ago to the day when we celebrated the return of Hong Kong to Mainland China! was still a dream back then, still an impossibility and the idea of not even conceived yet...well, well...who would ever have known!

The brass sign is from the street, the plate is from the entrance and the lovely hand-written letter from HK's last Governor, Lord Patten. And the old letterset was the only way we knew how to produce more than one menu copy…how quickly things move on!

*A Call to Writers for the 2017-2018 M Literary Residency*
For 6-8 weeks in 2017, two writers, one in Shanghai and the other in Beijing, will have the opportunity to write undisturbed in the heart of these two bustling cities. The residency is open to writers of prose or poetry, fiction or nonfiction and screenwriting.

All submissions are due by January 2, 2017 GMT midnight and must be in English or include an English translation.

Past winners have included Madeleine Thien, whose latest book Do Not Say We Have Nothing was recently shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, Tash Aw, whose novel Five Star Billionaire was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2013 and is currently being adapted to film in Shanghai and Rachel DeWoskin, whose fourth book, Blind, was published last summer.
