Three things nobody tells you about the Cook Islands — and I only know because my family is from there.

One: The best snorkelling isn't on a tour boat. It's right off the beach at Titikaveka, 10 minutes from most resorts, and you'll see more fish there than on the paid trips.

Two: The Saturday market in Avarua isn't a tourist market — it's where my family buys there taro, where the fishermen sell yesterday's catch, and where you'll eat the best ika mata (raw fish in coconut) of your life for $5. Tourists are welcome, but it's real.

Three: Sunday is sacred. Don't plan to shop, don't plan to rush, and don't be surprised when the whole island stops for church. The harmonies you'll hear drifting through open windows? That's not a performance. That's just Sunday.
