We know that the terroir in South Kivu is ideal for growing arabica coffee. But within the species of Coffea arabica there are many varieties, each of which has unique growing characteristics in the field and flavor profiles in the cup.

So which varieties of arabica are grown here in South Kivu? While many of the trees here are over 100 years old and transplanted here from other countries, there are a lot of new cultivars being developed locally. Often cherries are brought to a single washing station from many small farms and the exact varieties are not known in a particular lot of coffee.

A USAID guide to available arabica varieties in DRC highlights the following: Bourbon Mayaguez 17 (BM71), Bourbon Mayaguez 139 (BM139), Jackson 2/1257, SL 28, Mulungu, Kabare 16, Geisha, Catimor, Batian, Ruiru 11.

So Lucy happens to be a certified arabica coffee Q grader, and as a professional "insider," can say that some of the coffees we are drinking and serving in eastern DRC, are among the world's high scoring coffees in the cup.

However, scores and certifications do not capture the entirety of the value of this coffee or the people who pour their dedication, passion, and hearts into what you drink.

Bazima means to be alive. It's a common response in South Kivu to "how are you doing?" and in that response, "we are alive," there is resilience.

And that resilience is what makes it even possible to savor the luxury of Congolese coffee. To produce such a cup despite extremely challenging conditions to produce, process, transport, and prepare it.

We look forward to using our coffee evaluation skills to share with you over the coming months some of our favorite micro lots selected from around South Kivu.

People. Coffee. Value.

Here’s some coffee from this years harvest in Katana, here in South Kivu we are roasting today. It was just taken out of its parchment yesterday. It doesn’t get fresher than this, and we love tasting these coffees so close to where they were grown.
This is what green coffee looks like. Before we roast we will screen through it once more carefully for defective beans that might have a negative impact on the flavor. Let’s see how it tastes! coffee

Compost to coffee. A step beyond seed to cup.

This is a young coffee tree we planted from seed. South Kivu has prime environmental conditions for growing specialty grade arabica coffee, including altitude, rainfall, and rich volcanic soil.

Organic acid qualities in coffee can be enhanced by compost.

We have enriched the soil for this coffee seedling with organic compost we have transformed from urban waste in our neighborhood.

Check out our latest blog post here. We spent a day with a botanist documenting the various coffee species growing in the forests of South Kivu, and we visited the site where he is cultivating a coffee species he rediscovered and is closely related to arabica… called coffee kivuensis!

Most of coffee consumption around the world today is of two species of coffee: about 70 % arabica (Coffea arabica) and 30% robusta (Coffea canephora). Some people might mistakenly think…
