I love a properly set table…
No matter how formal or informal the meal, and regardless of how many people are coming. We eat with our eyes too, after all.
To make it feel pulled together I like to consider the surroundings beyond the table itself. The wallpaper, the colour in the cushions, light fixtures, and the textures in the room. Then, build from there.
I used to strive for matching sets of dishes, but I now much prefer mixing it up, bringing in something I got forever ago, playing with candle heights, and adding unexpected elements in a chosen colour palette. Right now, I’m drawn to deep reds and purples, so fruit and flowers naturally find their way onto the table too. (My nail colour is OPI Black Cherry)
A set table can be formal and still fun and approachable. I want people to feel drawn to it. To notice things. To be a little curious.
And, I always set the table the day before. My mother taught me that. It gives you time to fuss with it, change things around and, most importantly, enjoy yourself when everyone arrives.
Family style is my food service of choice. It encourages connection. Just be sure to leave space for platters.
I never seem to make time for place cards. But I insist on ironing the napkins. Don’t forget a carafe of water on the table. And dinner should always, always, be by candlelight.

And if you’d rather put your energy into the table (and the people around it) this Thanksgiving, we’ll take care of the food.
