HWY 4 - CAMERON LAKE BLUFFS SCALING - MONDAYS TO FRIDAYS:
⛔️ 9 - 11:30 am CLOSED
🟢 11:30 am - 12:30 pm OPEN for WESTBOUND traffic
🟢 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm OPEN for EASTBOUND traffic
⛔️ 1:30 -5 pm CLOSED
🟢 Outside of the weekday closures, this section of Hwy 4 will continue to operate with single-lane-alternating traffic and a pilot car. The route will also be open to single-lane alternating traffic on the BC Day long weekend.
Queues are expected to be lengthy so please plan for delays, fuel up and bring extra supplies, food and water. The timing of the closures ensures essential goods and services continue to reach communities, while motorists and scalers stay safe during this critical work.
Scaling must be performed in daylight hours and good weather -- scalers work suspended from ropes. Now is the most predictable weather to ensure the work can be completed as quickly as possible, as we move toward full reopening of Hwy 4. (More about scaling: https://www.tranbc.ca/2022/10/20/scalers-top-to-bottom-rock-removal-specialists/)
Vehicles over 2.6 metres wide, oversized loads and oversized loads requiring permits must use the detour route. Pilot-car convoys are available for commercial traffic upon request, in advance, by calling our Nanaimo office at 250 751-3246.
The four-hour detour from Port Alberni to Lake Cowichan uses forest-service and privately owned industrial roads. Driving conditions include potentially slow moving traffic, no passing, single lane bridges and rough gravel patches. Amenities for fuel, food, washrooms and emergency services are limited.
