Nexe Innovations

Nexe Innovations Plant-based. Fully compostable. No compromise. To date, billions of used K-cups crowd our landfills. The cup’s support ring is made from InGeo.

Darren Footz decided that there should be a more sustainable option without compromising taste. As the President of Granville Island Coffee, a nationally distributed coffee brand, Footz envisioned a single-serve beverage device that brewed not only a premium cup of coffee, but could also be constructed using 100% biodegradable and compostable materials. After years of research and development, he

and his team developed a single serve beverage ingredient package made from sustainable materials, the Nexe Pod. This revolutionary invention is made primarily using molded bamboo. The invention of the Nexe Pod addresses K-cup’s major restrictions on sustainability. This polymer along with bamboo, are compostable, biodegradable and made from readily renewable materials.

How much of our plastic waste is being recycled?

• According to a recent report by environmental groups Beyond Plastics and The Last Beach Cleanup, only 5-6% of plastic waste was recycled last year in the United States.
• In 2018, this number was 8.7%.
• Also in 2018, Americans generated 281 pounds of plastic waste per person, compared to 60 pounds in 1980, a 263% increase.

This has to STOP. We cannot continue generating more and more plastic waste while recycling rates keep decreasing.

Today is World Environment Day 2022. How can we make sustainable living the default option?

Transitioning to an economy less dependent on plastic is key to making sustainable living the default option for all of us. We need affordable, attractive alternatives.

With nature in emergency mode, we need collective environmental action to make this happen. Change has begun, now is the time to accelerate it and scale it up!

Today we are celebrating this year’s Learn about Composting Day! What makes composting great for the planet and why should we compost?

Here are nine reasons, why compost is great, according to the Compost Council of Canada:

1. Send less to landfills: organics represent over one-third of the materials being sent to landfills.
2. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions: Did you know that landfill sites account for~38% of Canada’s total methane emissions, according to Environment Canada? The organics that are buried in the landfill are a key contributor to the production of greenhouse gases.
3. Recover valuable materials: Compost is the most important ingredient for keeping the soil healthy and productive.
4. Decrease soil erosion: Soil erosion reduces the soil’s productivity and can remove nutrients from the soil. Compost helps enhance soil structure and binds soil particles together.
5. Revitalize soil: Plants depend on compost to convert materials into plant available nutrients and to keep the soil well-aerated.
6. Reduce the need to water: By improving soil structure through the addition of compost, more water is retained and is available to plants.
7. Less pesticides: Compost helps suppress plant diseases naturally.
8. Save money: You can turn your leftover organics into a soil enhancing amendment for free!
9. Make an actionable, positive environmental difference: With compost, you can turn something regarded as waste into something of value for the planet.

Industrial composting is a composting process which handles a wide range of organic materials on a much larger scale than home composting! 🌱

The benefits? Here are just some of the benefits of industrial composting:

1. They reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere
2. They slow the growth of landfills
3. They turn organic waste into fertile soil
4. They turn waste into biofuels, a great substitute to fossil fuels

Today is the first International Day of Plant Health!

Did you know that plants make up 80 percent of the food we eat and produce 98 percent of the oxygen we breathe? Protecting the health of plants is thus vital for protecting life on earth and improving food security. Climate change and human activities are currently damaging the biodiversity and health of plants, with up to 40% of food crops lost every year due to plant pests and diseases.

One way to protect the health of plants is by preventing and minimizing soil contamination. Soil plays a crucial role at maintaining plant health, filtering and neutralizing pollutants, but also releasing pollutants when contaminated.
Prevention of soil contamination is one of the best ways to maintain healthy soils and food safety.

Today is Earth Day 2022, and this year's theme is . Today is about promoting and helping accelerate collective action for solving the climate crisis. Investing in partnerships between businesses, governments and citizens for the preservation of our planet’s health is investing in our health and that of our children and their children. It is about transitioning to a more prosperous green economy and investing in our health.

Back in 2015, when we were starting, plastic packaging was the main cause for the global increase in plastic production. By 2050, 12 billion metrics tones of plastic will enter landfills or the environment if current production trends continue; and some of this plastic waste will enter our bodies, too. According to a recent study, humans already consume microplastics daily via their food, and this is now known to cause damage to human cells. We have all the evidence we need to take bigger, bolder steps towards a future with less plastic.

At NEXE, we invest in our health and our planet’s health by working hard every day on our mission to replace single-use plastic with plant-based alternatives. Today, we invite you to join us in our mission and would love to work together on accelerating solutions to combat plastic pollution. Our compostable innovations break down quickly in industrial composting facilities, do not leave behind any micro plastic residues and have no toxic effect on soil.

Please consider sharing this post with your friends/colleagues to increase awareness about ! Do you have ideas about how we can collectively invest in our planet to bring back the health of our planet and protect our species? Let us know in the comments below!

Researchers recently found deep in the lungs of living people. The most abundant microplastic particles were polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), often used in plastic packaging and bottles, respectively.

Biodegradable alternatives to fossil-based plastic are not only more sustainable, they also break down quickly in industrial composting facilities. Reversing the threat of microplastics to human health starts by reducing the amount of single-use plastic that ends up in our parks, oceans, lakes, and landfills.

At NEXE, we are driven to replace every day single-use plastics, like PET, PP with plant-based, fully compostable alternatives.

Microplastics were found in human lung tissue – with the most common particles being polypropylene and PET, often used in plastic packaging.

Today is . This day is about taking the time to reimagine how we can create a world which puts the health of our planet first.

The production, use and disposal of plastic is having a significant toll on the environment and our health, and by 2050 we will be producing three times as much as today. Did you know that 40% of plastic is produced for single-use purposes?

It is these statistics that keep us driven to find a solution. We are on a mission to create compostable innovations that replace single-use plastics.

Our patented NEXE Pod is a fully compostable, plant-based pod which contains no adhesives and composts in as little as 35 days in an industrial composting facility.

We are proud to have created a single-serve-coffee pod that breaks down and can become part of the circular economy. But more so, we are glad that you do not need to decide between convenience and sustainability, anymore. With the NEXE Pod, you can have both.

We congratulate the City of Richmond, BC for effectively banning most single-use plastic items!

The ban will be keeping 35 million pieces of single-use plastic out of the landfill each year. 👏👏

As of Sunday March 27, most single-use plastic items will be banned in Richmond in an effort to reduce waste.
