MUN Students Chosen To Present their Research on an International Stage This Month and They Want to Practice!

Three local MUN researchers have been invited to present at the prestigious 6th European Labour History Network (ELHN) Conference in Barcelona, Spain this month and they want to practice their presentations before they go! So, Rocket Bakery Mount Pearl is holding a free public event on Sunday, June 7 from 3 - 5 pm so you can hear what all the fuss is about!

The ELHN’s bi-annual conference will feature numerous professional scholars - professors, lecturers, postdoctoral fellows and other researchers - from around the world, and they have chosen research done by MUN students to be the sole focus of an entire presentation session!

Their presentation topic? Inventories of Life: Material Culture and Life, Death, and Medicine at Sea

The project looks at death inventories in Official Log Books of British merchant ships between 1860 and 1960 and tries to understand how death, accidents, and illness were handled aboard, both in terms of medical treatment and as a regular part of the dangerous life of a seafarer. Talks will feature stories and findings related to mental health, traditional - or just unprofessional - medical practices, and what seafarers carried with them and what those things meant to them and in the wider world.

Come to learn about some fascinating research that is and can only be done here, with the resources, expertise, and institutions of Newfoundland and Labrador, and help the team prepare for their presentations! This is a rare opportunity for students and will be a huge, international stage for a first professional presentation, so they would love a test run of the talks before a friendly audience, and would be grateful for local support! Each of the three presentations will be approximately 15 minutes in length and there will be time for questions.
