Balzac's Coffee Balzac’s 11th location is in historic Port Dalhousie, part of the city of St. Catharines.

Originally a bank, our charming building was constructed in 1907 and features two stories, both with outdoor patio seating. Port Dalhousie’s rich maritime history dates back to 1826 and is considered one of the best preserved 19th-century canal villages in Canada. Now a popular destination for cyclists, rowers, bikers and families who come to visit the beach, stroll the piers, and ride the famously restored carousel.

Coffee has been banned more than once, and it was rarely about the coffee. In Mecca, Istanbul, London and Paris, the people in charge worried about the same thing: a room full of people with their own opinions.

Home is your first place. Work is your second. The third is where community happens: cafés, libraries, barbershops, the park bench with the good view.

Sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term “third place” in 1989, and the research since has been pretty clear. Casual conversations with people you half know make us happier and more connected. Even a real chat with your barista counts.
