"Waiting on North America" 🇺🇸🇨🇦

I always thought Geoff Stirling & Joey Smallwood hated each other. Maybe it's because I got numb watching people confuse disagreement with disrespect.

I was wearing my Captain Canada shirt from OZFM the other day and a gentleman said "You're a little young to be wearing that"

I laughed and blamed it on the baby face. Very interested in what he was going to say next.

He asked if I ever watched the film "Waiting on Fidel"

I said no.

He smiled and said: "You're about to aren't ya"

He was right. Finally, an hour well spent on YouTube.

I remember a few decades before this trip they were competing at the highest level for Newfoundland's future identity.

Two architects of Newfoundland. One a capitalist, the other a socialist. Travelling to Cuba to meet a communist in the middle of the Cold War. How bizarre.

They challenged ideas. Bounced thoughts around. And seemed more like friends than enemies.

Funny how we face the same disagreements today, just with different faces, still searching for the same answers.

The old wise tale is true. What goes around in Newfoundland AND Labrador will most certainly come back around.

Some are born to obey. Most are cursed to see.

For some insanely strange reason I'm attached to this place like you wouldn't believe. I think it's the patient voice you bys carry when a yank is around.

Glad to be back. For ALL of us.

I got served a slice of humble pie the other day. I'm still munching on the crumbs. It was tasty.

A girl I "used to know" walked into the shop. I haven't seen her since the day I left Florida to chase the same dream in Newfoundland.

I always believed she’d be there when I came back.

And then she sat down and knew where to look.
She knew I’d see her.

Of course, time stopped. It always did around her.

For a few minutes, you should’ve seen my grin. I think she did too.

Finally.

I get to tell her everything.

Before I got the chance..

Another guy greeted her with a card and flowers.
Nice guy. Clean-cut gentleman.

My grin never left. But. The eyes got heavy meson.

The realization just hit me.
I never got her flowers

I left her to chase something I couldn’t see, couldn’t touch, and couldn’t promise would ever work.

And somehow, in that moment, I realized exactly what it cost me.

I made sure our paths crossed as she was leaving.
In the moment, it felt like we both knew.
No explanation.
No catching up.
Just one word, said almost in unison-
“Hey.”

And then she was gone.

Chase your dreams bys.. good luck understanding the cost of opportunity.
