A throwback to this time last year. 🇯🇵🏃‍♂️🍛

We had the pleasure of welcoming Yuki Kawauchi to Yukiguni before he competed in the 2025 Niagara Falls International Marathon.

For those unfamiliar with Kawauchi-san, he is one of Japan’s most recognizable marathon runners, famously known as the “Citizen Runner”. He rose to the highest levels of international running while working a full-time government job.

Before a race, one of Kawauchi-san’s traditions is a big, hearty bowl of Japanese curry and during his visit to Niagara Falls, we had the honour of preparing that pre-race meal for him.

The next day, he went on to win the Niagara Falls International Marathon……just sayin. 🤣

GYU-DON (牛丼): Thinly sliced AAA Canadian grass-fed ribeye and onions gently simmered in a sweet and savoury dashi sauce, served over steamed rice and topped with a hot spring egg. A classic Japanese rice bowl that evolved from gyūnabe (Japanese Hot Pot) during the Meiji era (late 1800s) and became a beloved comfort dish.

Ebi-Fry Curry Rice (エビフライカレー): Japanese curry rice topped with crispy panko-breaded JUMBO shrimp, an iconic Shōwa-era yōshoku comfort dish. Likely popularized in post-war Japan (1950s–70s), when diners began adding fried toppings to India/British-inspired curry rice to make it more hearty.
