Before there were roads through the Nazko Valley, there was a trail.

And it wasn't just any trail.

For thousands of years, the Carrier people travelled through this region using the Grease Trail, an ancient trading route that connected communities across what is now central British Columbia.

One of the most fascinating parts?

The trail was used to transport oolichan fish, which were highly valued for their oil and traded between communities.

Centuries later, parts of this historic route are still used for horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking.

🌋 WAIT… NAZKO HAS A VOLCANO?!

Yep. A real one.

Most people driving through the Nazko Valley probably don't realize they're travelling through a landscape shaped by volcanic activity.

The Nazko Cone, about 22 km from the community of Nazko, is a real volcanic cone that last erupted roughly 7,200 years ago.

And here's the really interesting part…

In 2007–2008, a swarm of earthquakes in the area put the Nazko Cone back on people's radar.

So next time someone says there's “nothing out there” in the Nazko Valley…

🦌 Wildlife? Of course.
🎣 Lakes and rivers? Plenty.
🌋 A volcano? Yep.
