We have respect for city workers at Dep Cafe, but some of us take it a little further. Sam Morisson is in love with the garbage man. Catch him on the street on Tuesday and Thursday morning with a bag of trash in each hand waiting for that special moment when he gets to see his crush IRL.

You can also find him every Saturday at 10AM on our stage singing his original songs about underwater academics, misguided mystics, the wisdom of dentists and everything in between.

Au Dép Café, on a beaucoup de respect pour les employés de la ville, mais certains d’entre nous poussent ça un peu plus loin. Sam Morisson est en amour avec le gars des poubelles. Vous pouvez le croiser dans la rue les mardis et jeudis matin, un sac d’ordures dans chaque main, à attendre le moment magique où il va enfin voir sa crush dans la vraie vie.

Vous pouvez aussi le retrouver tous les samedis à 10 h sur notre scène. Il y chante ses chansons originales qui parlent d’universitaires sous-marins, de mystiques qui ont perdu le nord, de la sagesse des dentistes et bien plus encore.

I’ve been ready about the history of coffee and I learned that the story of coffee is inseparable from the cafe. Ok fine I listened to a podcast about coffee and they said that coffee is inherently social because, unlike tea, people couldn’t make it at home so they had to gather in communal spaces to drink it. It was, like, a super smart, book level podcast so I might as well have been reading. They said that Voltaire invented tbe enlightenment on 40 cups of coffee a day. I bet he would have loved podcasts.

J’ai lu deux-trois trucs sur l’histoire du café et j’ai appris que l’histoire du café est indissociable de celle des cafés. Bon ok, j’ai écouté un podcast sur le café et ils disaient que c’est intrinsèquement social parce que, contrairement au thé, les gens pouvaient pas en faire chez eux. Il fallait donc se rassembler dans des espaces communs pour en boire. C’était genre un podcast tellement intelligent qu’on aurait dit un livre, fait que c’est tout comme si j’avais lu. Ils ont dit que Voltaire a inventé les Lumières sur 40 tasses de café par jour. Je gagerai qu’il aurait adoré les podcasts.

Getting on stage takes guts. Anyone can play music alone in their bedroom. Taking that next step isn’t so easy. Playing in a cafe has its own set of challenges. People are talking over your songs, the barista is making a smoothie with the blender set to max, your strings break during tuning, some jackass in a cyber truck drives by blasting Sandstorm with the windows down. Playing at the cafe is a first step, but it’s an important one. It teaches you to tune out the distractions and focus on what matters most: the music. Thank you to all the performers who come out and play through it all. We wouldn’t be here without you.

Monter sur scène, ça prend du guts. N’importe qui peut jouer dans sa chambre. Faire le saut, c’est autre chose.
Jouer dans un café vient avec son lot de challenges. Le monde parle par-dessus tes chansons, le barista passe un smoothie au blender dans le tap*s, tes cordes pètent pendant que tu te tune, p*s un do*****ag en Cybertruck passe en jouant Sandstorm les vitres baissées.
C’est une première étape, mais elle est cruciale. Ça t’apprend à faire de l’abstraction des distractions et à te concentrer sur l’essentiel : la musique.

Vraiment cool d'être featured dans The Main cette semaine. On est un café qui s'est donné comme mission d'honorer et de préserver l'héritage culturel du Mile End.

On se donne au max à chaque jour pour créer un espace ouvert et inclusif où la création peut prendre racine. On fait pas ça pour les likes, mais ça fait quand même du bien d'être reconnus.

Notre but, c'est de bâtir des bases solides pour que cette institution-là dure encore un autre 25 ans. On a hâte de travailler avec les artistes, les musiciens, les penseurs et la communauté pour faire de ce rêve-là une réalité.

Super stoked to get featured in The Main this week. We are a cafe with a mission to honour and preserve the cultural legacy of the Mile End.

We give our all every day to create an open, inclusive, space where creative expression can take root. We don’t do it for the likes, but it feels good to be recognized.

Our goal is to build a solid foundation so that this institution can survive another 25 years. We look forward to working with the artists, musicians, thinkers and citizens in our community to make that dream a reality.

PSA 🚨

N’oubliez pas de vivre tant qu’il en est temps. Ces jours de plein été semblent infinis, mais l’automne viendra vite, et nous devrons tous reprendre les existences délaissées au printemps.

Please remember to enjoy yourself while there is still time. I know these days of high summer feel endless, but before you know it Fall will be here and we’ll all have to attend to the lives we left behind in the spring.

We’ve been having a bit of a quiet summer around here. The weather has been so beautiful out that I can hardly blame people for wanting to spend the day in the park. There’s just so much to do in Montreal during the summer that it can be hard for our little cafe to compete. We’re happy that we can count on our neighbours and friends to come through to buoy us through the slow times with warm smiles and cheerful words. Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, we miss you and wish you all the best.

Cet automne, Le Dépanneur Café ouvre ses portes en soirée.

Nous sommes à la recherche de propositions d'événements ponctuels en tout genre : concerts, soirées de poésie, clubs de dessin, soirées de jeux, lancements de livres, salons et symposiums. Si votre projet nécessite un micro et une salle pleine, nous avons l'espace pour vous.

Les détails :

Les événements se dérouleront de 19h à 22h.

Formule obligatoire : Contribution volontaire / Entrée libre (Personne ne sera refusé·e par manque de moyens).

Nourriture et boissons sans alcool seront disponibles à l'achat (aucun permis d'alcool).

Si l'expérience est concluante et que la réponse est bonne, nous serons ravis d'explorer des collaborations régulières par la suite.

This fall, Le Dépanneur Café is opening its doors for evening events.

We are looking for one-off event proposals of all kinds: concerts, poetry readings, drawing clubs, game nights, book launches, salons, and symposiums. If your concept needs a microphone and a room full of people, we want to hear from you.

The details:

Events will run from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

All events must be PWYC / NOTAFLOF (No one turned away for lack of funds).

Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase (no liquor permit).

If the vibe is right and the community shows up, we are highly open to exploring weekly or monthly collaborations down the road.
