THESE ARE THE CAKES I LOVE MAKING: IMPRESSIVE ENOUGH TO STOP THE SCROLL, BUT WAY EASIER THAN THEY LOOK. πŸŽƒ

This pumpkin cake was made with vanilla cake and vanilla buttercream, and the secret to its shape wasn't hours of painstaking carving.

It was TWINE.
Yes, really. πŸ˜‚

By layering twine underneath plastic wrap and tying it around the chilled, buttercream-covered cake, I was able to create those signature pumpkin grooves without carving every single one by hand.

Then came a little extra buttercream to smooth out any imperfections, a touch of painted colour for dimension, and a textured modelling chocolate stem to finish it off.

The result? A full-sized pumpkin that looks like it belongs on an autumn dessert table.

And the best part is that you don't need a specialty pumpkin pan or a collection of expensive tools to try this technique.

Just a little patience, some basic supplies, and a willingness to trust the process.

Because sometimes the best cake-decorating tricks involve things you'd never expect to find in a baking tutorial. πŸ‘€
Save this idea for your next fall celebration!

WAIT… THAT'S A CAKE?! πŸŽƒπŸ‘€

No fondant covering the entire thing. No complicated sculpting tools. Just vanilla cake, vanilla buttercream, and a little bit of baker ingenuity.

One of my favourite parts of this pumpkin cake was adding the finishing details that took it from an orange cake to something that actually looks like a pumpkin.

🎨 The colour: I painted the buttercream with a mixture of ivory and terracotta gel colours to create subtle variations in the orange. Real pumpkins aren't one perfectly uniform shade, so adding those little streaks makes all the difference.

🌰 The stem: I used modelling chocolate, rolled it into a cylinder, then scratched grooves into it with an X-Acto knife to give it that rough, woody texture.

πŸŽƒ The final touch: I attached the stem with a toothpick to keep it securely in place.

And here's another option if you don't want to make a modelling chocolate stem: pipe one from buttercream, chill until firm, then carefully scratch in the texture.

It's amazing what a little colour variation and texture can do.
The goal isn't to make a perfect orange cake. It's to make an imperfect pumpkin. πŸ‚

Would you believe this was made entirely from cake and buttercream?

Some people want a traditional cake topper. I want a DINOSAUR THAT LOOKS LIKE PUMPKIN PIE. πŸ˜‚πŸ₯§

There is nothing I love more than creating fun, unusual cake toppers β€” especially when I get to combine a favourite food with a favourite animal.

And this little Pumpkin Pie-Ceratops? He might just be my favourite of all.

He's got the classic triceratops look, a braided pie-crust frill, pumpkin-spice colouring and little dollops of whipped cream scattered from his horns to his toes.

Even his colour was chosen to match the filling of a pumpkin pie. Because if we're committing to the theme, we're COMMITTING. πŸ˜‚

The best part about handmade cake toppers is that there are no rules saying you have to stick to the usual characters or decorations.

Love dinosaurs AND pumpkin pie? Why not combine them?
Have an oddly specific idea that you've never seen anyone make before? EVEN BETTER.

Those are the requests that let me get creative and make something completely one of a kind.

Be honest… would you put this little guy on your Thanksgiving dessert table, or would you be too obsessed to cut the cake? πŸ₯ΉπŸ¦–

A TRICERATOPS… MADE OF PUMPKIN PIE?! πŸ₯§πŸ¦–

I don't know what I love more: the fact that this little guy exists or the fact that I somehow managed to combine dinosaur spikes, braided pie crust and whipped cream into one cake topper. πŸ˜‚

Meet the Pumpkin Pie-Ceratops β€” possibly one of my favourite creations EVER.

Every detail was handmade from gumpaste, starting with that warm terracotta colour inspired by pumpkin pie filling.

πŸ₯§ The pie crust: Two tiny strips of gumpaste twisted together to create that braided pastry look.
πŸ¦– The horns: Three little triceratops horns, each finished with a dollop of whipped cream.
🍦 The whipped cream: Piped with royal icing using a #14 open star tip, then added to the tail and tiny toes for good measure.
πŸ‚ The pumpkin spice finish: A little splattering with gel colour gave the entire topper that warm, speckled look.

And those tiny details are exactly why I love making custom cake toppers. Taking two completely different ideas β€” a favourite food and a favourite animal β€” and turning them into one little character is SO much fun.

Now tell me: what food-and-animal mashup should I make next? πŸ‘€πŸ‘‡

TWO CUPCAKE DESIGNS. TWO PIPING TECHNIQUES. ZERO NEED FOR FANCY MOLDS. πŸ‘€πŸŽƒπŸŒ»

Want to turn basic cupcakes into a Thanksgiving dessert table that looks like you spent hours decorating? These two designs are all about using the right piping tips.

First up: THE PUMPKINS. πŸŽƒ
You don't need a special pumpkin tip to make these!
πŸ‚ Start with a large dollop of orange buttercream in the centre using a large round tip (I use a 1A).
πŸ‚ Pipe around the centre in arches, bringing each section toward the middle to create those classic pumpkin grooves.
πŸ‚ Add a stem with an Ateco #862 French star tip, then use a small round tip for the curly vines.
πŸ‚ Finish with a #352 leaf tip for those little green leaves.

Next: THE SUNFLOWERS. 🌻
These golden beauties are made with a #352 leaf tip, and the secret is all in the angle.
🌻 Hold your tip at roughly a 45-degree angle pointing upward.
🌻 Starting at the outside edge, pipe individual petals in a circle.
🌻 Move inward and repeat, building layer after layer until your sunflower looks full.
🌻 For the centre, switch to a #14 open star tip with chocolate buttercream.
🌻 Add a few green leaves, and you're done!

My biggest tip for both designs? Make sure your buttercream is the right consistency before you start. Too soft and your pumpkin grooves will disappear; too stiff and your sunflower petals won't pipe cleanly.

And for those rich autumn colours, tint your buttercream the night before whenever possible so the shades have time to deepen.

Pumpkin spice cupcakes + cream cheese buttercream + these two designs = Thanksgiving dessert table sorted. 🀎
SAVE THIS for your next fall baking session! Which are you trying first: pumpkins or sunflowers? πŸ‘‡πŸ»

YOUR BUTTERCREAM ROSES LOOK TOO MUCH LIKE CABBAGE? πŸŒΉπŸ‘€ Let's fix that.

The secret to a beautiful buttercream rose isn't just your piping tip. It's how you angle it AND how many petals you pipe in each row.

For these Thanksgiving Cupcakes, I used a Wilton # 104 petal tip to create these deep burgundy roses.

Here's how I do it:
🌹 Start with a swirl in the centre, then build your petals around it.
🌹 Work in odd numbers. I like 3 petals for the first row, followed by 5, then 5–7 as the flower gets larger. This helps create a more natural-looking rose.
🌹 Watch your tip angle! Tilt the thin edge of your petal tip inward for a tighter, more closed rose. Tilt it outward for a more open bloom.
🌹 Pipe ahead. I pipe my roses onto parchment paper on a flower nail, then freeze them so they're much easier to transfer onto cupcakes.
🌿 Finish with a # 352 leaf tip around the base, and suddenly your cupcakes look like tiny edible bouquets.

One more tip: I always tint my darker buttercream colours the night before when possible. Time helps those rich shades develop without having to add loads more colouring.

SAVE THIS for your next floral cupcake order! 🌹
