B C W H I S K Y • BC whisky deserves more attention.
For a long time, when people thought about great whisky, their minds naturally went elsewhere. Scotland, Kentucky, Ireland and Japan.
Places with long histories, familiar names, and shelves full of bottles people already know. Those regions have earned their reputations.
That said, something very real has been happening here in British Columbia.
Across this province, small distilleries have been quietly building a whisky identity of their own.
Working with local grain, BC agriculture, coastal air, mountain water, orchard influence, wine barrels, copper stills, patient aging, creative cask finishes, and a level of craftsmanship that deserves to be taken seriously.
This is not novelty whisky. This is not “local, so let’s be nice.”
BC whisky has grown into a genuinely respected category, with producers making single malts, ryes, corn-based whiskies, peated expressions, cask strength releases, wine barrel finishes, and bottles that can stand proudly beside much more familiar names from around the world.
That is exactly why our BC whisky program exists.
At The Barley Merchant, we believe there is world class liquid being made here by real people, in our communities, and it deserves to be poured, talked about, compared, respected, and supported.
There will always be room in the whisky world for bourbon, Scotch, Irish whiskey, Japanese whisky, and the famous global brands, but there should also be room for the bottle made a few hours away by a small team putting everything they have into their craft.
BC whisky is no longer asking for permission to be part of the conversation…It is already there and we’re here to help you join the conversation as we shine a little more light on it.
