Farm & Food Care Ontario Farm & Food Care Ontario is growing public trust and consumer confidence in farming and food by working collaboratively with Ontario farmers and food partners.

July 2021 update: We have just learned that someone is falsely representing themselves as a FFCO agent & recruiting foreign workers to come to Canada at great personal cost. This is a scam. FFCO does NOT facilitate immigration to Canada or arrange contracts for Temporary Foreign Workers. Farm & Food Care is a coalition of farmers and associated businesses proactively working together with a commitment to provide credible information and strengthen sustainable food and farming for the future. Sheep have nearly 360-degree vision? That’s because they have rectangular pupils! This allows them to see behind them without moving their heads.

Celebrating Ontario Agriculture Week with a farm tour in Northern Ontario.

Today, we welcomed Canadore College students for a firsthand look at where Ontario food comes from and the people behind it.

Our first stop was Wand Family Farm, where students learned about mixed farming and the family’s beef cattle, sheep, poultry and crops. We then headed to Wasi Chefs for an all-Ontario lunch and a look at how local agriculture and culinary skills come together in a true farm to table experience.

We finished the day at Kunkel Dairy Farm, where students explored modern dairy farming, robotic milking technology and the role technology plays in supporting animal care and milk production.

A big thank you to our hosts for welcoming us and sharing their knowledge, and to our presenting partners for making today’s tour possible: Ont. Happy Ontario Agriculture Week, there is no better time to celebrate what makes Ontario Agriculture special!

The Greenbelt plays a unique role in Ontario’s food system; it is home to the province’s only two specialty crop areas, the Holland Marsh and the Niagara Tender Fruit and Grape Area, whose fertile soils and unique climate conditions allow Greenbelt farmers to grow crops that can’t be found commercially anywhere else.

Greenbelt farms are a major supplier of Ontario-grown fruits and vegetables. In 2016, the Greenbelt had 269,912 acres of farmland in fruit production and 2,801 acres in vegetable production.

This is more than 50% of all of Ontario’s fruit acres 🍷🍇

🍑🍐87.9% of peaches, 85.8% of plums and prunes, 84.4% of apricots and 71.8% of pears are grown in the Greenbelt.

🥕🥬🥦Over 66% of Ontario’s celery, 47% of cauliflower and 25% of the province’s acreage in lettuce, spinach, Chinese cabbage and carrot is grown in the Greenbelt.
