I don't really have a farm story for you this week.

I've found myself listening to the people in my life instead of the plants.

Every summer, Fireweed paints entire hillsides pink.

Most people know it as the flower that appears after wildfire.

What I didn't realize was that Fireweed doesn't actually need fire.

It simply knows how to recognize an opportunity.

Its seeds travel on the wind.

Its rhizomes wait beneath the soil.

And when the light returns, it's ready.

You can't make this stuff up.

Monday started with a crazy busy day at the shop.

Then someone screamed.

There was a snake.

Someone got bitten.

A shopping bag became a temporary snake carrier.

And somehow, that still wasn't the most unexpected part of my day.

Turns out, Goldenrod is a lot more complicated than it looks.

This is Tall Goldenrod (Solidago altissima)—and discovering exactly which species it was changed the entire story of its medicine.
