Uncle’s Shawarma & Kabab

I have been eating here for years and am finally taking the time to shout out. Hands down, the best falafel I know of. Super fresh, all sauces made in house and flavours are full spectrum. This is real food made by real people at its best. I have only had the falafel, pakora and samosa, but they are all excellent… and the other meals I see being prepared look to be at the exact same standard. If meat is your thing it looks as fresh and clean as the veg. Run by a friendly Afghani couple, you know you are in good hands the moment you walk in to this unassuming spot in a little plaza at Bridge and University. 100% real deal. So grateful that I can always have a reasonably priced lunch here, and not feel like s**t when I am finished. Thanks Uncle… and Auntie👊🏼

I keep meaning to shout this gem out but I am always on the clock when I go and stuff myself and split. If you like doubles, this place is the real deal, like Albion Rd real deal. Family business, food made by real people that also eat it. Typical West Indian fare… no fusion, no French fries. Ingredients are fresh and identifiable, a when you ask for hot it’s legit hot. Homemade hot. The hot sauce alone is worth the trip. I mostly stick to the doubles because doubles are perfect (and vegan 😉) but I have tried the roti and jerk as well. All excellent. The pictures tell it like I is, stripped down and clean. It’s all about the food. Sometimes it can take a while, but always worth the wait so I call my order ahead if I can.

This post will be of particular interest to Grey Highlands residents and part-time residents.

There’s a public community meeting on January 22 at 7pm at Annesley United Church about the future of the old Markdale hospital site, and it’s a conversation that really matters right now.

Housing continues to be one of the biggest challenges in our area. Most of us know someone who works in Markdale or Grey Highlands but can’t find a place they can afford to live nearby. That affects local businesses, services, families, and the long-term health of our community.

A local volunteer-led non-profit, Affordable Housing in Grey Highlands (AHIGH), has recently had its conditional offer accepted to purchase the old hospital property, with the goal of keeping the site a community asset and developing mixed-use, non-profit rental housing aimed at working people in our area. The group is now in an investigation phase to determine the best path forward, including whether renovating the existing building or rebuilding makes the most sense.

This meeting is a chance to learn more, ask questions, and hear how housing, walkability, and Main Street vitality all fit together in this proposal. Projects like this only succeed with community input and support.

If you live here (or spend part of your year here) and care about the future of Grey Highlands, I hope you’ll consider coming out on January 22.

Ok, maybe I am the last to arrive at the party, but Toronto peeps and visitors, this is the greatest food I have eaten downtown since Gandhi Roti closed its doors (and on that note, is a pretty fine replacement at the location).

gets The Bicycle full seal of approval. Nothing fell short, nothing out of place and absolutely welcoming. I wouldn’t go if you are in a rush, because the food is hand made and prepared to order. If you are reading this it probably means you have eaten at The Bicycle and understand my appreciation of great food taking the time it takes to get to you. That being said the Laphing we ordered as an app came very quickly, and honestly I could have just eaten 6 plates of those.

I can’t say enough about the flavours and textures… the sauces… honestly. Lots of veg and vegan options and it seems they can accommodate most diets. It’s one of those places where you have an insanely satisfying meal and ask yourself “why do we eat meat again…?” I don’t make this point as some sort of born again Vegan. I had Tandoori chicken and a mango lassi (which btw was off the chart… full cardamom flavour). I am just making the point that you do not NEED flesh in your diet and that plants when prepared properly can hold their own against any meat.

The prices are great, the service was exceptional and the vibes were perfect. The Parliament location we went to was below grade and very cozy… would be great for a date. The menu would be ideal for a group of 4 for sharing. Sounds like going before 6 is your best bet because in the evening it packs out, but you can put your name and cell on a wait list for the next table. It’s a great neighbourhood to walk around in still so (except there still isn’t a record shop!?) if you have to wait it is as pleasant as you allow it to be. Their second location is in Bloor West Village (don’t worry, not a chain, family owned and operated) and sounds like it is as exceptional. I don’t usually rave about a restaurant unless I have been three times but there is no goddamn way this was just a lucky visit. This is the real deal.

Shout out to for the intel👊🏼

I keep meaning to post about .bako located in Markdale but I always destroy my order immediately as it is so GD delicious. Finally trying the house made kimchi REALLY put it over the top.

Seriously, if you haven’t yet, do yourself a favour. It’s the best thing to happen in the area, as far as grabbing lunch goes, well… frankly, since The Bicycle opened. If you got what we were dining you’re going to love this. Fresh, subtle flavours, great value and hand made with care. ❤️🔥🙏🏼

The Bicycle has lost another member of its family. This came completely out of the blue and is devastating news for us.

Lanny was there from day one, with his enormous three person appetite, relentless optimism, and genuine heartfelt support and encouragement. He was like an uncle to our kids, and a reliable brother to Julie and I. It you knew Lanny, you knew he was as complicated as he was overflowing with positivity and his bright light when it shone always obliterated any darkness that may have been previously trying to cloak him. He held no grudges, gave all he could and took only what he needed.

Not being a man of permanence, he would not want us to mourn him, but to continue to celebrate the things he cherished. Quality, the natural world, mental and physical health, athleticism, and family. If one thing defines Lanny in my mind it is how much he loved his daughter and his mother... and hockey. Nothing much else mattered, the rest was just stuff.

He and I had some good conversations about spirituality. We both believe that there has to be something more than just this. The world is so amazing, how could there possibly not be something even more amazing behind it all. I like to think that he has moved on to a new plane. One that does not require the limitations of a body. In the mean time, I am left behind him here with the time I have left, with the people I love, my stuff and a very crisp, personal memory of him shirtless on the ice in Flesherton Arena slapping pucks from the blue line and going hard into the corners with guys half his age that could have been playing pro. When I feel like even my robust enthusiasm is being challenged, I have this to draw upon to keep the faith.

Wish I could have slapped your back one more time buddy and told you how much I loved you and what a good person you were… despite that you often drove me NUTS sometimes . I’ll be having a whiskey wearing your Calgary Flames hat tonight buddy.

Appreciate people for who they are in the moment, not what you expect them all the time.

The family will receive friends at the Fawcett Funeral Home Flesherton on Friday, November 15 from 1:00pm until 3:00pm.
