I wish to share some tragic news on one of my staff-family members. On the evening of September 29th, Kate (Kateryna Nazer) was hit by a speeding car and critically injured. The driver fled the scene and was later apprehended and charged. Kate remains in a coma with very serious head injuries along with numerous other damages to her body.

Kate came here from Ukraine on her own when the war started. At only 18 years old and with no family, she was taken under the wing or another of my staff-family from her country. I have watched her come out of her shell and become a valued part of our team. Her hug and smile when she came into work is something I have treasured so much.

My staff-family team has truly made me so proud through all of this. Many have been visiting her regularly, reading to her, and offering her love and prayers through all of this. Love and family comes in many different forms and is often not a simple as we think.

One of the staff (Thank you Austin) has started a Go-Fund-Me page for Kate. She will have many challenges moving forward and anything collected will help. I would appreciate any support you may be able to offer her also. Thanks for listening and please keep Kate in your thoughts and prayers.

A couple of special memories from Mother's Day 2026.

Ryan and I. This has become our tradition. I knew Ryan's parents Wilf and Millett very well for many years. They were regulars at The Top of the Inn Restaurant for the 20+ years I was there. They would bring their 'little guy ' with them always. I often would carry him down to the car at the end of the night while saying goodbye to them.

Susan hails from PEI just like me. She comes into Edmonton every year to visit her family living here and each year she treats them all to "the best brunch ever" - her words. This year her grandson asked if he could get a picture with her friend Paul. He liked my jacket and asked what I would be wearing next year! Too funny.

What I do is not really just about being a gracious host and putting on a special event - it really is all about making friends into family and making everyone feel special.

This was my 45th Mother's Day celebration - and it may just have been my favorite one yet!

What an amazing Mother's Day Royal Brunch it was yesterday - and exhausting too. Just as we were unload the last (of many) trucks back here at home base, a guest review came in that truly made it all worthwhile. It literally brought a tear to my eye. Thank you Helen P. - you made our day!

We attended the Mother’s Day brunch at Northeast River Valley Park catered by Sawmill Banquet & Catering and it exceeded every expectation. From the moment we walked into the breathtaking timber-beam hall, it was clear this was going to be a very special event. The room was elegant yet warm and welcoming, with beautifully set tables and an atmosphere that felt relaxed and polished at the same time.

What truly set this brunch apart was the incredible organization and attention to detail. They even provided guests with a buffet “map” outlining every station and feature — from omelette and carvery stations to salads, desserts, gluten-free/vegan options, and even the chocolate fountain and ice cream sundae area. It was such a thoughtful touch and made the experience seamless despite the large crowd. You could tell this event was planned with care and professionalism.

The food quality was exceptional. Every station was beautifully presented and constantly refreshed. The dessert display looked like something from a luxury wedding reception — elegant, colorful, and almost too beautiful to eat. The variety was impressive, with options for keto, gluten-free, diabetic, and vegan guests clearly labelled and easy to identify. For a buffet, the quality was genuinely outstanding.

The staff were professional, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable. Having team members stationed at each buffet area who could answer questions about ingredients and dietary needs made such a difference. Tables were cleared quickly, coffee service was efficient, and at no point did guests feel rushed. The service felt gracious and welcoming from beginning to end.

A special thank you to Paul, the manager, whose presence throughout the event did not go unnoticed. He was visible, courteous, organized, and clearly committed to ensuring guests had a wonderful experience. That leadership showed in every detail of the brunch.

The added features — including the omelette station, carvery station, chocolate fountain, photo booth, and spectacular dessert tables — elevated the entire experience and made it feel truly memorable and festive.

This was one of the best catered brunch events we have attended in Edmonton. Sawmill Banquet & Catering delivered excellence in food, hospitality, presentation, and organization.

Our Ponzu Salmon - Perfectly pan-seared Atlantic salmon, topped with our sweet and tangy ponzu sauce, served with a side of crispy fried balsamic Brussels sprouts on a bed of jasmine rice. Finished with furikake for a burst of umami. Perfectly paired with a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
