The news of GRETA Edmonton closing hit us hard.
When a fellow downtown restaurant closes its doors, the loss is felt far beyond one business. It affects employees, neighbouring businesses, local suppliers, and the vibrancy of the community we all share.
As a family-owned restaurant that’s proudly called Downtown Edmonton home for the past 24 years, this feels deeply personal.
Like many businesses, we’ve experienced increasing safety concerns, break-ins, rising operating costs, years of construction, and the gradual loss of the everyday foot traffic that once kept downtown thriving. None of these challenges alone are enough to close a business but together, they become what GRETA’s owner so accurately described as “death by a thousand cuts.”
Despite it all, we’ve rarely complained because we believe in this city. We believe Edmonton is worth investing in. We believe that when we continue putting good into our community, good can come back.
Restaurants are about so much more than food. They create jobs, support local suppliers, pay local taxes, and provide gathering places where memories are made. Every independent restaurant contributes to the heartbeat of our city.
This isn’t about one business or one political decision. It’s about recognizing that confidence matters. Entrepreneurs invest where they believe they have a future, and thriving local businesses help create thriving neighbourhoods.
To our elected officials, we simply ask that the realities facing local businesses remain part of every conversation about Edmonton’s future. Public policy affects real people, real families, and real livelihoods.
And to our community: thank you. Every visit, every takeout order, every review, every recommendation, and every dollar spent locally makes a difference.
Downtown Edmonton has incredible potential. We still believe in it. We still believe in this community. And we hope to see a future where local businesses aren’t just surviving, but thriving. ❤️
