Hiroshima Okonomiyaki

One of the greatest Japanese street food in my opinion, my favorite comfort food is Okonomiyaki from my hometown. I’ve heard from many people who visited all over Japan saying that the best food they had was Hiroshima’s Okonomiyaki. What makes our version even more special is that we use our ramen noodles and make it crispy. This dish has been getting a lot of love calls so we decided to put it back on the menu for this upcoming pop up. We’d recommend to order it as soon as you sit down as it takes a lot of love and time to make it.

The way to make a good Black Garlic Oil, in my opinion is the ratio of the toasty light brown garlic chips and blackened bitter garlic chips as described in this picture. You might notice our Black Garlic Oil might be more brown compared to other ramen stores, that’s because I care more about the flavour than the way it looks. There are more secrets to the oil, however, let it be secret 🤫

Introducing our new Garlic Shoyu Ramen!
As I mentioned in the previous post, I have been dreaming to remake this soup for the longest time and I cannot wait for you to try it. The feedbacks from my friends and family has never been more promising and I truly hope that this will be your new favorite as well.

We are also planning to bring back our popular Hiroshima Okonomiyaki on the menu as a lot of people have been asking for it. Thank you for your enthusiasm and supports, and we are going to do our best to meet your expectations.

I have this childhood memory Ramen I cannot move on from for the longest time, which my family used to go to more than 10 years ago. This ramen store near our house was my family’s routinely visited place on the weekends. One day the store closed its door suddenly because the owner was simply exhausted from working all by himself. This Kogashi Shoyu Ramen was something I really wanted to replicate ever since I started making ramen. I’m here to share this good news to everyone that it is finally ready to be served. Though some of you may tasted our Shoyu Ramen at the previous pop up and gave us tremendous feedbacks, I guarantee this Kogashi Shoyu ramen will blow your mind.

We are planning our next pop up on the February 17th, Monday. I’ve never been more excited and confident to do this. I can’t wait to serve you all and see smiles on your face.

First of all, THANK YOU truly for the supporters who said “When’s the next ramen pop up?” “Your Ramen is still our favourite” “Kaiyuramen’s Onomichi style might be the best ramen I’ve had in this city” “OMG! BEST RAMEN!” etc…

Your encouragements mean everything to me and I love you all truly. For this upcoming pop up, I will make sure each and every bowls of ramen are made with pure love and attention to details.

What a perfect weather for a warm bowl of ramen🍜

This beautiful bowls were made by Edmonton’s local artist ! She has been really diligent with my particular order and I am truly amazed with what she’s crafted so far. I just love each and every bowls for its uniqueness and how they all have different personalities.

There’s only limited number of these ramen bowls for this upcoming pop up, so please feel lucky if you are served with these beauties. If you didn’t, please come back next time ;) There are more bowls to come and I can’t wait to see them all.

Just a friendly reminder, tomorrow March 18th Monday is our ramen pop up! 😋🍜 At Izakaya Tomo, the door will be open from 5pm to 9pm or until the soup runs out.

About our noodles:
Noodle making has always been one of our most enjoyable yet the toughest part of the ramen making process. For the last 2 pop ups, has been helping us make noodles since our little noodle making machine has broken. We’re proud to say, from now on our noodles will be made by Kaseyramen’s ramen noodle experts.

This month’s noodles is thiner and firmer, feels much pleasant to slurp. These noodles are high hydration egg noodles which means it’s tougher to get soggy and has nice chewiness.

It is still our own recipe so please do let us know of your thoughts on our new noodles and we will be making improvements as necessary 😁

Kaiyu Ramen Pop up is coming up tomorrow!
We will be opening from 12pm-2pm for Lunch and 5pm-9pm for Dinner.

As usual, lots of Tonkotsu ramen variations including regular, spicy, black garlic, miso and gyokai will be prepared and our featured “iekei” (家系) ramen will be limited to 20 servings.

***Just for heads up, lunch menu won’t be including gyoza and takoyaki. While for dinner service we will be offering our full menu. It will be cash only and walk-ins are welcome until soup lasts.

We can’t wait! See you tomorrow at Izakaya Tomo! 🍜

Ramen pop up announcement! 😋
Have you made any plans on Family day yet? If not come visit us next week on the 19th, next week MONDAY for either lunch, dinner (or both😉) at Izakaya Tomo! Door is open from 12pm-2pm and 5pm-9pm (or until soup runs out).

We will be featuring the iekei (家系) ramen which is originally from Yomohama in Japan. People go crazy for this type of ramen and I didn’t know why until I tried it on my last trip back to Japan early this year. It requires more than double of bones and meats compared to the regular Tonkostsu we usually serve and naturally it’s so much richer. Just finished the final testing test now and couldn’t be happier with the final products. We are so excited for you to try it! Only 20 servings will be prepared so it’s better to come as soon as you can!

Unfortunately we decided not to take much reservations this time as we would like to welcome more walk-in customers. It was too painful to deny many of the walk-in customers on our last pop up due to fully booked reservations. We will still be accepting reservations for who are visiting us from far, like Calgary ;)

Hey it’s almost that time of the month, once a month Ramen pop up is going to be on the Nov 20th, Monday next week! We’ll be waiting for you at from 17:00-21:00 or until the supply lasts 🥰

This month’s Special is Onomichi Ramen which has originated from ’s hometown👨‍🍳 This famous soy sauce base ramen has few characteristics that distinguishes from any other shoyu base ramen. The floating pork back fat adds extra richness to the soup, the thin flat noodles have good texture and absorb the flavour of the soup really nicely.

Various Tonkotsu ramen, Takoyaki and Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki will be served just like last month.

Can’t wait to serve you again soon!
