Locals at the Old House

As the post says, Locals at The Old House is hiring a full time cook. Experience is a must, with a starting wage of $24/hr or more based on experience, or a potential salary if a good fit. Salary would be negotiable if offered.

Some would define us as a 'Farm to Table' restaurant, as we source local ingredients over all others, wherever possible (it's literally our name). This restaurant has French roots, as evidenced in the menu, but has branched out beyond that over the last 15 years.

We're housed in one of the oldest buildings in the Comox Valley - a building known as 'The Old House'. It's an absolutely gorgeous wood beam and cedar shake style building, that was once home to the Kirk family.

It overlooks the new Kus Kus Sum reclamation and rehabilitation efforts of the Puntledge river and estuary, where they've returned the riverbanks to their natural state.

Based on our last post, a few people came in, called, dm'd, and posted questions about what kind of items they could expect on our three mid week nights where we run themed features and specials.
I though it easiest to just take a selection of those inserts and post them here for you to look at.

Tuesdays nights are Seafood Market - where fresh seafood reigns! All of our feature dishes will have fish or shellfish or other seafoods.

Wednesday is Date Night, where a dinner for two - an appetizer to share, 2 entrees, and a dessert to share come in at a set, discounted price.

Thursday night is the Butchers Table, where local meats and poultry are featured.

On each of these nights our full regular menu is still available, these themed features are in addition to the regular menus which you can see when visiting www.localscomoxvalley.com

A few recent food pics at Locals!
I know I am biased, but I think our Locals Burger is one of the best I've ever tasted. We grind in-house a mix of strip and tri-tip at 70/30, for a 6oz patty. House made bun, garlic aoili, aged cheddar, pickles, and local tomato, lettuce, and bacon - with your choice of side.
Seafood Cakes are going on the menu as well after selling out of them repeatedly when we featured them as specials! These are made with yellowtail snapper, wild caught prawns, and served with a red pepper remoulade.
The Salad Nicoise is going to be added to the regular menu next week, and features everything you look for in a nicoise! Tuna conserva, local egg, greens, tomato, and potato. Olives, artichoke, green beans, and house dressing. Possibly the best 'meal salad' ever invented!

For the last few months, we've themed up a few of the nights of the week, to provide a menu that delivers to those looking for specials that appeal to their specific tastes.
It's been a smashing success - especially Date Night on Wednesdays, which we've been running for a year now.

Tuesdays are the Seafood Market - this means our fresh sheet is geared towards fresh seafood for the night. Our full regular menu is available as well, but the features for the evening will be Seafood based. Recent features include Oysters, Rockfish, Bouilliabase, Albacore Tuna, Scallops, Salmon, and Crab

Wednesdays are Date Night - where a dinner for two is $112. This includes a starter to share, two entrees, and a sharing dessert as well. The regular menu is available as well of course.

Thursdays are the Butchers Table - which features meats and poultry exclusively on the fresh sheet. Recent features include Lamb, Duck, Cornish Game Hen, Beef Tenderloin, Venison, pates and terrines, tartares, and more.

Holy toledo! I was floored at how many of you participated in the Gift Card giveaway from last week - perhaps we should do it again?

A running feature this week is a crispy seared Brome Lake Duck Breast, on house made butternut squash ravioli, stuffed with house made cheeses.
We're about to say goodbye to the 2nd picture - the Braised Lamb Shank on saffron & white wine risotto, with seasonal vegetables, red wine reduction, and gremolata (this dish will be leaving to make room for an upcoming Brisket).
And the 3rd pic is of our Mushroom and Beef Rigatoni - with braised beef jus reduction, local and wild foraged mushrooms, diced cornichon, and house made chive creme fraiche.

All hearty Winter dishes, with that rustic comfort food feel.

Wow! What a fantastic few months we've had! From the intensity of the holidays, then New Years, and then Valentines, things just haven't slowed down a bit here at Locals.

Chef Alain has been with us for a few months now, and he and his team are - as they say - 'absolutely killing it'. A full reinvention of all of the menus (Lunch, Dinner, Brunch, Childrens, Midday, and Dessert) has added a ton of new items and many returning favorites to our line-up
Today's post is zeroing in on those 'returning favorites'
Having worked here before, Chef was very familiar with the menu when he took over the role in December. His first order of business was to bring back the favorites everyone has been clamoring for.
Seafood Chowder is back! One of our flagship dishes, literally loved around the world (you should see the love chowder gets in our emails) has returned. White fish, wild caught prawns, mussels and clams, in our one of a kind seafood broth with local vegetables and cream make this one of the heartiest chowder you'll ever find.
The West Coast Seafood Stack is back! Prawns and tuna with sushi rice, pickled vegetables, and miso ginger dressing has been on the menu for over a decade. It disappeared for a while last year, so it could be reinvented and added back to the menu for 2026!
Lastly for today - the return of the Scallops and Pork Belly! It has returned as an entree rather than an appetizer. More seared scallops, a lot more of our herb pressed pork belly, all presented on a French lentil cassoulet, with an apple sage brown butter emulsion. I am so happy to see this one come back!

Locals @ Home has begun! We have the first assortment of preserves and canned items that can be found throughout our menu - in or on our dishes - now ready for you to take home.
Pear chutney. Tomato jam. Pickled jalapeños. Zucchini relish. Pickled beans, and from our Pastry Chef, Blackberry Lavender gelees. All vegetarian/vegan. All featuring Locally grown items.

This is the first step for 'Locals @ Home', and we look forward to bringing you many, many more items this year under the 'Locals @ Home' banner.

These are only available to pick in person for the time being, but we are working on wider availability as we speak.
