I never set out to start giving away pizzas and restaurant food. Steve from North End Pizzeria Cornwall was the catalyst - he just wanted to give away a couple of pizzas a few weeks ago, and he asked me to do it for him, and do it however I liked. I researched how to hold different online contests, and the style that spoke to me, was people nominating other people for kind acts they had done. Deserving people. This does two things. The nominator is being kind by nominating someone they think is deserving, and the nominee is already kind, because someone just nominated them for it. These posts become Kindness Threads. We’re showing kindness, and spreading kindness. For negative people, our kindness posts must drive them crazy. Only one negative man has had the cojones to say something publicly. All he posted was this:
🤢🤢🤢
Nice life buddy. Your family must really love having you around. For the rest of you - I delivered two giveaway pizzas today 🚗🍕both made personally by Dave, the co-owner and chef at King George Restaurant, both pepperoni by request, to two different, deserving families. I took no photos and did not intrude. I was simply Kind. They know who they are. We hope you enjoyed your supper.
Doing this is tough, for someone with Empathy. The first contest, I struggled to not cry when reading all of the entries. Sometimes I did, and I had to stop reading. This contest was a little easier, but still, sooo many people. I have endured so much negativity on social media here in Cornwall. Haven’t we all? Now I’ve done a complete 180. Reading all of your responses to my posts, and then doing the contests proves it. There are TONS of kind people here. All of you posting and nominating. We just don’t talk about it, Kindness, and when people are mean or rude online, we withdraw. But these giveaways - this is Our Space. For the kind ones. It’s been a pleasure reading all of your caring words for your loved ones. You guys are really something. I mean it.
Speaking of which, I went in to King George earlier this afternoon, to talk to Dave and place the order for the giveaways. I hadn’t really had a chance to tell him what these giveaways are like for me. It was quiet, so we sat for a few minutes. What I’m doing, Dave? It’s hard, and it actually takes up a fair amount of time, organizing it all. I feel bad asking restaurants to help, when they need help too. Choosing who deserves the freebies is tough. YOU ALL DESERVE IT. All of you. Me included. That’s why I ask for tips. I used a quarter tank of gas pulling all this together this week. Not to mention my time spent organizing everything. Thank you to my first two tippers, that means more to me than you can imagine. So kind. E-transfer [email protected] if you’d like to see me keep this going.
(I’m thinking about working out wholesale deals so I can buy cheap pizzas and give them away each week)
When Dave and I were done talking, I left. Dave had something up his sleeve that I didn’t know about. I’d be back in a couple of hours.
I went by at 430 today to pick up the two giveaway pizzas, and Talia the waitress brought out three pizzas. I felt terrible. I thought I had made a mistake and they had wasted a pizza. Then Dave walked out, and without a word, slid the top two boxes aside to reveal some words written on the top of the bottom box. You can see what he wrote in the first picture.
Well, s**t. Something for me! Here I am spreading Kindness, also thinking What About Me though, and then what do I get? One of his King George pizzas, made just for me. So nice! AND…it was a Canadian. Pep, mushrooms and bacon. Dave is making the best bacon on pizza right now. I think it’s the best Canadian in the city maybe. That bacon. That sauce. Just outstanding.
It was a six slice medium, so I thought of who I could share it with. Who could I now be kind to, and just show up with a pizza to share? If it was after 7, when Lola’s kitchen closes, that’s where I would have gone. Hm. It was only 5. Where else? I know! My friend Jackie is a bartender at Bill's Sports Bar, their kitchen closes at 2, it would be busy, I knew she’d be hungry, and I knew I’d know people there. Boom.
Walked in with that pie, there was one seat at the bar, and all eyes were on me. Big eyes, with mouths open. What do we have here? Grabbed that empty barstool, ordered a Corona Zero (almost eight months sober!), and asked Jackie if she was hungry. Yep. I asked for some paper plates. Before sharing, I told everyone I had to take some photos first.
Angie, a regular, helped with the cheese pull. That’s her greasy hand in the one photo. As I asked everyone down the left side of the bar if they wanted a slice, every single person said yes. As people had their first few bites, I still hadn’t said where it was from. Nobody could guess. Then I said King George, and taste that sauce, y’all. Look at the bacon. This is a quality pie. Two grey-haired old-timers nibbling on slices were so excited. Neither had had a King George pie since it burned down all those years ago. It was just like they remembered. Angie had forgotten all about the restaurant, said it was her new favourite pizza, and that they just found themselves a new customer. You have to understand, six people all raving about a pie makes the others at the bar not getting any, want to get one too. I bet King George gets two drunken orders from those other Bill’s regulars tonight.
I have no master plan for these giveaways. I’ll keep doing them. The restaurants are being kind, you guys are being kind, and I have the time to Be Kind right now. No guarantees. Help me if you can. When I don’t have time any more, I may have to stop. But right now, for the next two months, let’s do this.
