Story time! 📖
Tomorrow is our weekly Slice Card draw; we're drawing from all the Slice Cards turned in that week to pick a winner of a large 3-topping pizza. We do this every Tuesday 🙂
So on Thursday and Friday, something happened, and I'd like to share it with you all because it was such a feel-good moment, that I think the world needs more of. On Thursday one of our regulars, Dan, turned in his slice card for a free slice but wanted me to hand out the card to a random person to write their name in for the draw. So that's exactly what I did. The next day a teenager came in, and I handed it off to them.
That same teenager came back Friday asking when I would know if I won. I explained I do the draw every Tuesday, and I'd text them if they won. They spent their entire lunch at the table at the front. We got to chatting. I asked if they usually spent their lunches alone or with friends. They said alone. I explained I like being alone too; there's nothing wrong with that. I asked, "What's your favourite course in school?" They said the special ed class is where they're learning life skills. We got to chatting about special needs, their family, and my own. After their 1-hour lunch was over, I thanked them for spending their lunch with me. And I got to thinking… I hope Tommy’s always feels like a safe space for everyone. ❤️
Before my draw video tomorrow, I thought to myself, "Why don't I pull out that kids' card today and text them to win a large pizza?" It would probably make their day.
So that's exactly what I'm going to do. I will still do tomorrow's draw video, but that teen will get a large 3-topping pizza today because that small gesture could mean a lot.
Shout-out to Dan the man, and have a great start to your week.
