💛 Remembering John Kwok Leung Lau, The Heart and Chef Behind Calgary’s Golden Inn 💛

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of John Lau, beloved founder and head chef of Calgary’s iconic Golden Inn Restaurant.

Since opening its doors in 1977, Golden Inn became more than a late-night Chinatown staple, it was a gathering place filled with good food, laughter, and community.

John’s passion for cooking and his warm hospitality touched generations of Calgarians. Though the doors of Golden Inn closed in 2022, John’s spirit will forever live on in every memory, every shared meal, and every story told over his famous salt-and-pepper squid and signature lobster noodles, each dish carrying a piece of his heart.

Golden Inn was his world, his pride, and his passion.

John leaves behind a proud legacy and is survived by his three sons, who will continue to carry forward the values, traditions, and dedication that made Golden Inn a true Calgary treasure.

Thank you, John, for 45 years of flavour, family, and unforgettable memories.

Rest easy. You’ve more then earned it 🕊️❤️

After opening its doors in 1977, Golden Inn Chinese Restaurant has announced it will be shutting down for good at the end of the month.

To our wonderful and loyal customers: After 45 incredible years of serving you authentic Chinese cuisine made with passion and love, we have come to the difficult decision to close our doors. Our last day of operations will be Saturday, August 27, 2022.

We are so grateful for all of your support over the years and we will miss you - many of you have become like family to us.

Golden Inn has been run by the same owners in the same location since opening our doors in 1977, and we take great pride in having become a Calgary Chinatown establishment. We hope to see many of you one last time.

For the remainder of this month, Golden Inn will be open Sunday through Thursday from 4PM to Midnight (closed on Tuesdays), and Friday and Saturday from 4PM to 4AM.

Come enjoy your favourite dishes and help us say goodbye.

Golden Inn Restaurant was recently featured in a documentary called "COVID-19: The Spread of Racism". The pandemic has produced a surge of racism against Asian-Canadians.

Give it a watch. It's going to be re-aired Nationally on CTV's W5 on Nov 7 at 7pm MST.

Since the onset of the pandemic, Chinese-Canadians and other Asian people in Canada have been targeted because of the origins of the coronavirus.
