🏠 Did you know that between 1942 and 1946, Lougheed House was transformed into Lougheed Barracks, housing hundreds of members of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps?

During these years, one of Calgary’s grandest private homes became a military residence, a workplace, and a community for women serving on the home front. To meet wartime needs, the site was reshaped for military use, with additional huts constructed in the rear gardens to accommodate new recruits. Drawing on archival materials from Lougheed House, this talk explores the experiences and daily lives of the CWAC members stationed at Lougheed Barracks, from the early days of CWAC recruitment and training to their duties and everyday life.

Join us in welcoming Dr. Francesca Zambolin in the final event in our fall speaker series: Life at Lougheed Barracks: the Women of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps.

Lougheed House's Trick or Trivia Night is back from the dead and spookier than ever! Wear your best costume (optional) and stop by the best Halloween trivia in town. We'll be testing you on all things Halloween history as well as some of the most iconic scary movies and tv!

This is a FREE, adults-only event. Come early (doors open at 6:30 pm) if you want to guarantee a seat - it's first come, first served - and grab a drink or a snack at the bar and explore Calgary's own spooky Victorian mansion right here in the Beltline.

Join us outside of Lougheed House with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government on Friday, November 20 for the raising of the Métis flag as part of Métis week!

Lady Isabella Hardisty Lougheed, who built Lougheed House with her husband, Sir James Lougheed, was a Métis woman born in Fort Resolution, Northwest Territories.

Today, in addition to displays within the museum, we fly the Métis flag to honour Isabella's heritage and our connection to the Métis Nation of Alberta.

Just because history is in the past, doesn't mean it isn't changing. Our modern understanding of history is often shifting based on new resources becoming available - and this is a perfect example of that!

While doing research for our newest outdoor pop-up exhibit on the history of Halloween, we discovered that the earliest known use of the phrase "trick or treat" isn't dated to Blackie, Alberta in 1927, but to Sault Ste. Marie in 1917!

Check out Tricks, Treats & Traditions: A History of Halloween in Southern Alberta on display now until November 5 and learn all about the origins of many of the Halloween traditions we practice today.

👋Meet Dr. Francesca Zambolin! Her research focuses on women’s histories, memory and experiences during the Second World War.

Let Francesca give you a glimpse into a very different time at Lougheed House – the years when hundreds of women lived and worked at what was then called Lougheed Barracks during their time in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in the 1940s.

Curious about Calgary’s wartime history, or interested in the lives of some of Canada’s first official women serving in the military? This promises to be an interesting window into our local past and the lives of Calgarian women during WWII.

Did you know that in for three whole years between 1942 and 1945 the children of Alberta gave up trick or treating for candy and instead collected pennies for the "Milk for Britain" fund?

During World War Two, when Lougheed House was Lougheed Barracks, the "Milk for Britain" fund was a project started by the Kinsmen that raised money for milk for children in Britain struggling with shortages from the war.

While the "Milk for Britain" fund is long gone, trick-or-treaters from the early 2000s may remember that the charity UNICEF started a similar campaign, sending children with boxes for coins when they went out on Halloween.
