🤔 Did you know that before St George's Island became the home of the Calgary Zoo, it was the home of an annual Labour Day picnic and sport competition?

The 1921 Labour Day picnic advertised races for children of all ages, a race to collect a number of potatoes as fast as possible, a tug of war (no gloves), 5 vs 5 football, and a prize for the largest family at the picnic. Thousands of people attended, and the firefighters won the tug of war competition.

Curious about more of Calgary's early labour history? Join us on September 17th for a free talk at Lougheed House with Kirk Niergarth in the first installment of our A House of Story fall speaker series!

🥳Happy birthday, Alberta!
On September 1, 1905 Alberta officially became a province and Senator Sir James Lougheed noted it in his diary, which we currently have on display in the Senator's Study here at Lougheed House. James Lougheed was a member of the Canadian Senate at the time and was living in the 14-year-old Lougheed House.

Next time you visit the museum, take a look at his open diary - James noted that it was fine weather on that day and that September 1 was also his birthday!
